Team Fortress 2 on ATI HD 5850?

I managed to start Team Fortress 2 with open source driver, but the performance is too poor. I decided to install AMD proprietary driver (fglrx), after that Team Fortress 2 refuses to start. The black screen will come up for one or two seconds and closes itself. However, I can run Killing Floor or Serious Sam 3 just fine (the performance isn't up to the standard on Windows, though). What is the issue?

Solution: install AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta 11 driver. This is done in XUbuntu (12.10), it should work in any Ubuntu based distro.

1. Remove all current drivers (fglrx in this case):

sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev*
sudo apt-get autoremove

2. Reboot.

3. Install the required packages:

sudo apt-get install build-essential cdbs dh-make dkms execstack dh-modaliases linux-headers-generic

If you're using the x86_64 architecture (64 bit), also do this:

sudo apt-get install lib32gcc1

4. Download AMD Catalyst 12.11 Beta 11 driver here: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/amd-driver-installer-catalyst-12.11-beta11-x86.x86_64.zip

5. Run the file and follow the installation instruction.

sh amd-driver-installer-catalyst-12.11-beta11-x86.x86_64.run

6. Write to xorg.conf

sudo amdconfig --initial -f

6. Reboot when requested.

EDIT2: New issue, it refuses to work properly in fullscreen, just a black screen with audio. It only works in windowed mode. I'm using XFCE (XUbuntu).

Install Catalyst 12.11 beta 11:

That way is assuming you're on Ubuntu.

Once you have installed Catalyst 12.11 beta 11, you may also want to change some video options in the game like Anti aliasing or HDR. You will need to restart the game once you have change those parameters. Browse the forum to read discussion about this driver's performance and workaround.

Modified the thread. New issue, it won't work in fullscreen (just black screen with audio) but it works in windowed mode. Is it WM related issue?

I looked up in my terminal history for the instruction, it worked perfectly. I would appreciate if you point something out, though.

I'm in the same boat as you. I have a machine with a 5870 and TF2 only works right with open source drivers, but is unplayably slow. Only closed source drivers which work are the new AMD betas, but it doesn't work fullscreen and in windowed mode it is also painfully slow (but a bit faster than open source)

You may want to downgrade to 12.04 LTS, I have dual HD6970's and had to down grade to get my cards to work properly, 12.10 broke a lot. I have a separate boot drive so it's not an issue for me to swap out a distro, I learnt to do this the hard way, but I've been using linux since pre .99L (loadable modules, woot yay, was big at the time ok) days.

I''ve similar problem, on gnome everything works fine but on cinnamon i see only black screen when i ran TF2. I've HD5650M and Catalyst 12.11 driver too.
