The graphics card is a Radeon HD 7870, and the AMD driver version is 12.10 (12.11 has other problems on my system, and doesn't seem worth using).

If xserver crash, then it's a driver bug, not a steam bug

What kind of problems exactly? I ask because if now there is some bug that you have in 12.10 (xserver crash) but doesn't have in 12.11, it's better to report 12.11 issues to AMD.
(attach /usr/share/fglrx/ report)

I know an X server crash is an fglrx bug and not a Steam bug, but I thought it might be useful to post here anyway, as the Linux driver teams of the major graphics cards are apparently working closely with Valve, and people who know something about Steam might be able to help my identify where the bug lies by where it interacts with the fglrx driver.

Still, a bug report with the AMD guys would be more appropriate.

RussianNeuroMancer: I'm not sure (i'll check momentarily), but I believe the driver problem exists within 12.11 as well. The problem I have with 12.11_beta11 is that it renders many (but not all) of the walls in TF2 transparent. I'm not sure what other problems it may have — I switched when I noticed that, because gaming-related improvements were supposedly the whole point for me. I'll swap drivers again and post back in a few minutes.

(Strangely, I couldn't reproduce the bug just now, toggling compositing a few times.)
