Steam for Linux

What should I use? fglrx or fglrx-updates?
In my Ubunut 12.10, if I go into System Settings and then Software Sources, in the Additional Drivers tab, I get three options. We all know what they are, but I'm going to say anyway,
X.Org X Server
fglrx
fglrx-updates

I don't usually use my Ubuntu partition for gaming, so I was never really interested in that section there. But now I am.

My question is, what's the difference between fglrx and fglrx-updates? And which one should I use for Steam and games?

Hey, thanks guys.

ATM there is no difference (same driver for both).
Eventually fglrx-updates will... get updates and "fglrx" will probably stay with the initial release.

For now I recommend you manually install the latest drivers from AMD's website.
Ooh. Never really had a good experience with that. I had to reinstall Ubuntu once because I messed something up. Well, things might have changed...

Does the fglrx versions have any sort of relationship with the driver version numbers? I'm not really sure what I'm using at the moment.

Sorta.
I think fglrx on Ubuntu 12.10 is Catalyst 12.10 (modified to use a new version of X).
I can give you specific instructions (that work for me personally) to install fglrx from AMD's site if you'd like.
fglrx-updates is broken since it was introduced, and that's the reason why it always contains the same version as fglrx - it doews not work, nobody wants to fix it, so it is pointless to update it with a newer driver version...
A mi me salio este error tratando de arrancar team fortress :(
required opengl extension "GL_EXT_textture_sRGB_decode"

Use los dirvers de la pagina oficial de AMD y tambien los de los repositorios cual es el problema?

AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P320 ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200

my english is bad :S but this is my problem please help me xD

fglrx-legacy does not support this.

Yep, getting the driver from AMD's website doesn't always integrate nicely with the package manager. If you're using Ubuntu, a better approach might be to add the xorg-edgers PPA here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

That PPA plays nicely with the package manager and pulls in a bleeding edge graphics stack. I was using Ubuntu 12.10 with the proprietary fglrx driver that shipped with it (effectively Catalyst 12.09, I think), and was getting a crash on start-up with TF2.

The xorg-edgers PPA currently pulls in Catalyst 12.11 beta 11, which fixed all my problems.
Hey, baffled.mollusc. Thanks for that, I'll see if I can do anything from there!

EDIT: Sorry, a question. What exactly am I typing into the console for Xorg Edgers? I added the PPA, and uninstalled my old drivers. What next?

Well, you install fglrx, this time using the version supplied by xorg-edgers.
So do I just go sudo apt-get install fglrx again?
Also important... how do you revert to the stable drivers if things get broken?
@Dymoblade: you may want to include fglrx-amdcccle.

Reverting back: purge the ppa (I would use Y PPA manager) and revert to the available drivers.

You can always check this unofficial, but useful wiki: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page
Right. So I can remove all my existing proprietary drivers, then use:
sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
and I'll all be set?

Thanks for the help guys.

How to know what drivers I have installed? If I am using some other source than amd.

Yes, that should do it.

Edit: Actually xorg-edgers pulls in a *lot* of package updates, so you'll want to do a "sudo apt-get update" first, if you haven't already.

To be really specific, what I did was fire up synaptic, then do Reload / Mark All Upgrades / Apply.
