I Have a S3TC Error Fix for TF2
Okay so after hours of slaving over my computer in terminal and whatnot I finally found out how to play tf2 on ubuntu 12.04 with an old radeon card (radeon hd 4670). What you have to do is simple. Go to:
http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/package/xorg-edgers/precise/main/base/libtxc-dxtn0

Click apt install and it will fix the problem tf2 will play with sound video and all of its lovely glory. Enjoy :)

This library is ancient and mentioned, like, everywhere - you really spent hours of searching...?

There's a patent-free and officially supported version (libtxc-dxtn-s2tc0) available in the official Ubuntu repos (and likely on almost every other distro as well), no need for legally doubtful 3rd party packages.

I would like to see a post with someone who actually figured it out because I havent found any that actually got it working.

It ain't a new problem that only Valve is running into, just searching for S3TC support would've provided a lot of Google results - especially when using Wine one runs into it a lot.

Valve should probably somehow handle it in their dependecy check routines (or even include it in their runtime), though, as they officially support at least one free driver.

Yeah well they dont care about us legacy (less wealthy) users and hate non-nividia users im starting to question if the source engine is really enough for me to want to stay with valve.

You did notice how much effort they spent with getting the free intel driver into shape? It's more of a "one fits 'em all" driver mentality...

Yeah well they do it for intel but dont flame, I enjoy using amd much more than intel and dont think its fair to us that they dont have a one driver fits all for us yet. Im just hoping for the best.
