necesitas instalar las librerias de 32 bits que vienen con tu distro del driver radeon y mesa, te recomiendo que ejecutes steam desde la terminal para revisar si no ta faltan lbrerias

apt-get install ia32-libs 

tambien te recomiendo usar como minimo mesa 9.2 junto el kernel 3.8 y si vas a usar mesa 10 usa el kernel 3.12

con esa gráfica yo recomendaría sin duda alguna usar el driver fglrx
