Linux gaming with ati
I've always heard ghost stories about ati support lacking on linux, please tell me how back it is, what the "drivers" currently lack that nvidea has and how well the current games like tf2 and all that run.

The only real problem i've had with linux drivers is stability. They crash on me every once in a while. The only other problem i've experienced with them is that sometimes Anti Aliasing doesn't work.

You mean none atall? are you speaking of the proprietary drivers or the source drivers? I have little to no issue with my nvidea drivers and i really want to give ati a shot.
phillippi2 2014 年 1 月 23 日 上午 11:52
Both, actually. The proprietary drivers and the open source ones

I don't know what to do for this new build.. I'm starting to dislike nvidea and theres just too much choice to worry about.

I have Linux Mint 15 x86 OS on a HP g6-2235 with an AMD A10-4600M; but I don't have any video driver problems since I use the Xorg-edgers ppa (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) to update my ATI/AMD drivers continuously, that way I have the lastest driver always.
If you don't want to go that route you can also try compiling your ATI/AMD driver(s) by following the website tutorial: http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page (that's what I did initially for a time, no problems, its fun and thorough but after a time it gets boring).

But to reiterate I haven't had any driver problems and my steam games on linux works fine.

I own two comparable systems with an HD7970 vs GTX680
and use the official drivers for both cards (catalyst and nvidia).
There arent much differnces as long i use kubuntu or ubuntu distributions. Most Games work fine and very performant. In SteamOS AMD Cards have problems with the BIG Picture Mode.
Conclusion: If you use Ubuntu or equivalent distiribution and one of the enthusiast cards of the manufacturers feel free to go with amd or nvidia the way you like ...

I have an HD6950 some games don't run with catalyst drivers (natural selection 2,hamerwatch,pandora purge of pride, full bore, wizorb, wyv and keep, etc) some of them work with the open source drivers, there is a lot of games without antialiasing or other missing function, most of the time dev make a workaround in their game to let ati user playing the game, because ati didn't fix it,or they fix it and 6 month later reintroduce it(painkiller hell and damnation, etc).

Most of the time nvidia have more performance on games than ati ,you can check benchmarks on phoronix.

I have 150 linux games on steam other on desura and from other places,i'm happy with most of them wich are playable, but i' m not happy with others i can't play with or have poor fps or stuttering(serious sam 3,etc).

I use to run a AMD 5770 which i found the drivers mostly fine for. The issues i had was rough performance on TF2 and L4D2 but they were still kind of playable. This could of been due to my card. I have now upgraded my whole system and now running an Nvidia GTX770 and I find that the source games are much smoother. This is mostly due to having a far more powerful card though. As for people saying serious sam being bad on ATI, I now know that it is mostly due to the port more than the drivers as even my nvidia struggles. On a side note i found amdcccle pretty crappy on linux for configuration. The nvidia configuration tool seems easier to use. I wouldn't say the same for windows though. I have had many issues getting my 3 monitors running on Windows with nvidia.

I am currently running an AMD A10 5800K APU with the latest cat's in Kubuntu 13.04. I haven't had any issue with running any of my steam games other than for the limits of my apu. For example I can start LFD2, but its too choppy to play. Games like FTL run perfectly!
Benjamin 2014 年 1 月 25 日 上午 3:35
MerReady, you should REALLY try to the open source driver. I have an a10-5800k also, and I can run LFD2 at great. 40fps or higher at 1080p, with medium settings.

You need at least kernel 3.12 and Mesa 10, so your Kubuntu 13.04 is a bit too old as is.

Additionally, support for 13.04 ends this month.

With your games crashing like that it does seem like you are having a display/graphics driver conflict. You may have to return back to an older or stable version of the catalyst driver(s). I would recommend that you post your problem on a seperate thread with the debug syntax, and try running the program through the command line that way you can copy and paste the error codes onto your new discussion thread. Also, be sure to include some of your detailed hardware specs into the new discussion thread.

There's been a lot of problems lately with the recent release of Ubuntu 14.04 and driver conflict, simply because the drivers are not supported yet.

Yeah, I would recommend an older beta driver. I am still using the beta6 driver.
