Low framerate tf2.
I'm using Linux Mint 17 and this is the first time everything has ran perfectly on a linux distro. I'm having trouble running tf2 though. My specs are
AMD FX-8120 @ 3.5GHz
8gb ddr3
XFX Radeon R9 270x @ 1GHz driver version fglrx 2:13.350.1. So I'm using the propretary drivers.
On my windows partition I can run the game at max settings. On Mint I sutter about every five seconds. When I play the Portal 2 beta I have almost no framrate issues. Anyone know what's going on?

Have you tried limiting your framerate to something more obtainable for you? Maybe fps_max 30? (which yields a maximum framerate of 30 fps) Doing that in some games makes the average framerate higher/more stable.

I can play this on windows at 60 with vysnc on and not drop at all. I don't think I'd take too well if I'm only limited to 30.

So I used fps_max 60 and it seemed to help some.

If you'd turn off AA and vsync, you'd probably get a completely smooth experience.

Why would I do that when I can run it with 8x AA and vsync turn on in windows?

Because you want to play it under linux and want it to be smooth. This part can easily be figured out. If you want to go further, report your issues to AMD so one day maybe you'll be able to use these features. http://www.amd.com/linuxreport

He's asking why it's different on Linux than the performance he got on windows.

It's because the AMD Linux drivers compared to AMD windows drivers are still not very good from what I hear. On Linux you get the best driver support at the moment from NVidia.

Some people get very good performance on AMD under Linux while others don't, and sometimes having certain settings on (like AA) can greatly reduce your framerate.

Ideally there is no reason you should have any major difference in game performance between windows and linux. But in reality it depends on how good the driver support is for each OS. AMD has improved Linux support a lot lately though, but it's still not quite there.

Due to limited available ressources the fglrx driver is still primarily developed for professional usage, gaming is only a secondary priority.

Unfortunately this GPU is still way too recent for being properly supported by the free driver, especially if you want to squeeze out as many FPS as possible.

Try open source drivers, proprietary are still useless for gaming and AMD is actually paying open source developers for their work (and shifting their focus to open source from proprietar).

When I use the opensource one it turns direct rendering off.
