Serious Sam 3: Low Frame Rate
Hi,
I am on the latest public beta of SS3, I have my 3 Performance settings set at Medium, and still I get only 7fps.
I am on Ubuntu 12.04 Cinnamon, I am using AMD 12.11 beta 11 drivers.
My CPU is an Intel i7 2.93GHz
My GPU is an AMD Radeon HD 6780
and I have 14GB DDR3 RAM.
any thoughts as to why my frame rate is so low? or should i continue to wait for the game and steam to be stabilized?

Maybe you should try kde (without kde effects).

Likely a driver issue.
SS3:BFE has serious performance issues too with my HD 7970 (Catalyst 12.11 beta 11) as well.

Sirik, try disabling power settings on the GPU, unplug any eventual gamepads, make sure performance settings are on autodetected settings. If nothing helps, please post a log file.

Hi AlenL, i dont have any power settings on my card outside of AMD overdrive, and that is on auto. Autodetect doesnt help either. Can you tell me where i can get a log file from?

I tried auto detect performance settings again, and it set CPU to Ultra and GPU to High. This resulted in 7 FPS on the main menu.

Sorry, that was a typo on my side! I meant powersettings on the CPU, not GPU. You can turn it off in the BIOS (the nuclear version - but safest), or switch the governor to performance. You now have the "ondemand" governor and it is running the CPU at minimum clock when the game is launched.

Thanks AlenL... I have seen other people being told they should turn off power saving in their BIOS and i did look for it... but unfortunatly I cannot see any power saving options in the BIOS. I have a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R. Lots of options for Overclocking, but nothing stood out to me as being for power saving.
In windows there is a Gigabyte program for controlling power saving features, but that was turned off when i moved to Linux.

To change the CPU governor, you could try running
for i in $(seq 0 "$(expr $(grep -c "^processor" /proc/cpuinfo) - 1)")
do
sudo cpufreq-set -c $i -g performance
done
You might have to install the cpufrequtils package first though
sudo apt-get install cpufrequtils
There are probably graphical tools for this though, but I haven't really used them.

I've had poor performance with my HD5770 as well even with these more power-hungry CPU governor settings. Alen, if you want me to post logs as well, I'll throw some at you later today.

no good... i set the CPU governor to Performance, Updated my bios and when through all the settings.. I used auto detect settings in SS3 and it chose Ultra, High, High.. but with these settings i get FPS between 0.65 and 6.53... guess i will have to continue to wait for things to improve.

That's strange. Your system is better than mine (AMD Athlon X2 4800+, AMD Radeon HD 6670. 4GB RAM) and I usually have about 30 fps.

i can get about 33 fps if i set everything to Low... but i shouldnt have to do that. I'm not sure what is wrong.

thanks for everyones help. When i started Steam today, the steam client updated and so did SS3. now with medium settings i get between 20 and 33FPS when outdoors and between 80 and 143FPS inside/underground. much more playable now. Water still kills the FPS though. and i still get flickering shadows... and i still cant use the right-click without the menu popping up.. but we are getting there.
