If you run steam through terminal using
sudo steam
both of the book of unwritten tales games work. However steam crashes after closing the game for what ever reason.

You should never run Steam or most other applications as root.

That may be true, however it is the only way that I have found to get The Book of Unwritten Tales The Critter Chronicles to launch. The Book of Unwritten Tales can still be launched directly from the sh file in the games local content.

Disable Steam Community for BOUT.

I got it to work with the overlay turned off, however the fact that the games run through sudo implies that there may be some permission issues with steam.

Since it works with other games it implies a permission issue with BOUT actually. ;)
