You should post terminal output, as usual.

You open a console/terminal program and start steam from there. (Just type "steam".)
When you start the game, it will output some stuff, hopefully usefull error messages.
Those you post here.

PS: root would know such things.

Whats your specs drivers and kernel you are running? I have no problems on Ubuntu 12.04 with 3.5 kernel and Radeon 13.1 drivers on 4890XFX and please send error output.

I can run Metro LL, but its completely unplayable on my Ubuntu 13.10. I must get an FPS of about 2. Just installed the latest AMD 14.1 beta drivers, and no change.

Go to the dash and search for terminal. Then type steam on the terminal and launch your game as usual. When you close the game, don't close the terminal; just copy and paste the output of the terminal. To copy text from the terminal press CTRL+SHIFT+C on the highlighted text; then just CTRL+V as usual on Steam. CTRL+C on the terminal is a reserved key combination for quitting an active process. (In which case, if you pressed CTRL+C you would have quit Steam instantly)
