What distribution are you running? I'm on Kubuntu 12.04, and I just had an update. steam:i386 was removed and replaced by steam-launcher. If you are on Ubuntu, try aptitude search steam and see what comes up. Install steam-launcher if it's there.

I just tested with a fresh install of LinuxMint 14.1 64-bit with this installer, and it worked great:

I downloaded the archive, double clicked it in the Firefox download window, which opened gdebi-gtk, it prompted me for my password to install, and successfully installed it.

I then opened a terminal window and typed "steam" and it brought up a window with a list of 32-bit packages to install, I entered my password again, it installed them and then started steam.
