Copying TF2 content from Windows to Linux
I already have TF2 installed on a Windows PC, and would like to also install it on my Linux box. Is it possible to copy the platform independent (data) portion of the content across between the two platforms to save another 12GB download?

Yes, you just need to copy all GCFs for the game in your ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps directory, namely:
source materials.gcf
source models.gcf
source sounds.gcf
source 2007 shared materials.gcf
source 2007 shared models.gcf
source 2007 shared sounds.gcf
team fortress 2 content.gcf
team fortress 2 materials.gcf
team fortress 2 client content.gcf (althought I'm not sure you'll need one on Linux)

FIle names in Linux are case sensitive. In Linux all these files start with a capital letter. For example, Team Fortress 2 Client Content.gcf.

Running fine here regardless of upper or lower case file names...

That's odd. Linux is case sensitive and Steam looks for uppercased files. I copied my gcfs from my Mac and had to rename them in order for Steam to recognize them.

Don't know, but this is what my folder looks like.

Well, I can only think your OS is an exception. Which is it?

Thanks! It is playing fine, with similar quality to the windows PC despite the lower end graphics card in the Linux box.

Today I'm copy 12gb Team Fortress 2 from one computer to another. I use for this backup/restore game dialog from steam agent interface.

You do not need to "copy" the files
You can link it, so that the files are shared between linux and windows installations. you must mount windows partition every time before launching steam.

The command for linking a single file is as follows, you have to change it for each file.
Go also need to know your Steam Library directory. You can learn its path from Steam settings->download tab, button at the bottom.

ln -sf "/media/WRITE-YOUR-WINDOWS-DIR/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/source models.gcf" "STEAM-LIBRARY-DIRECTORY/SteamApps/Source Models.gcf"

I don't recommend linking unless you're really strapped for disk space. The performance of Linux NTFS drivers has always been rather poor next to "first class" file systems such as ext4.
