Steam for Linux

Steam for Linux

TF2 Big load times, and sometimes not at all.
Started steam from the command line, so I could watch. After double clicking on TF2 it starts loading. One big issue I see is a bunch of lines saying: ####### Log failed to open /tmp/gameoverlayrenderer.log #############

Then it loads the cache, takes forever:

Precache: Took 58984 ms, Vertex 1010, Pixel 2178
Game.so loaded for "Team Fortress"

Now its just sitting there, I can see the grey screen with buildings sort of faded out, waiting for the menus to show up. This could be stuck, or next time it could take 10 minutes, or it could take 5 minutes.

Then if I try and play and happen to get on a server that makes me download a file, it crashes instantly. It cannot download any custom files.

So that's where I am. If I try for about an hour I can sometimes get in and play.

UPDATE:
It is also having the ld preload problem:

ERROR: ld.so: object 'gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored.

One problem fixed, for some reason the file /tmp/gameoverlayrenderer.log was owned by root, so my user couldn't open it. Removed the file and that error went away.
Bump!

I got this problem asweelll, big loading times , almost impossible to join friends! because their game is finished when/if I get in.
+1
I had just ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it working by fixing the symlink problem this morning. It started and made it into the menu in short order, then I had to work.
Went to start it tonight, and TF2 updated itself first. Now it gets stuck at the loading screen just after the valve movie. top says MainThrd is sucking 100% cpu. I gave it a minute or two then killed it, after which steam itself was fine. I verified game files, but same behavior.
Serious Sam BFE still works fine.
Kinda sucks that I didn't try to play it this morning :(
Aha! Taking a cue from a different thread, it looks like it added some windows files when it updated just now:

I've experienced some long load times too. I timed it. With my i5-750 it takes almost 50 seconds for the game itself to load. It took a whopping two minutes and 22 seconds to load the second Soldier training mission.
I have the same problem with my laptop ( Intel HD 4000 and i7 ), in contrast to my desktop with i3 and nvidia grafic card.
TF2 shows gray picture during several minutes.
I found a lot of identical lines in /tmp/gameoverlayui.log:
Warning: The game hasn't rendered a frame from us in over 10 seconds

I have same issue.

Loading to the main menu takes a very long time. And after it, it takes much longer to join to the server.
Often it hangs on gray loading screen with buildings and never load to main menu. I launching TF2 on several attempts - sometime I need to reboot whole computer and try it again.

I encounter the same problem today. I receive an invitation to beta test last evening and install "Team Fortress 2" (this night) then I run it and all was seem normal to start - I even play first training. But this morning I try to start TF2 again and games seems freeze on "Game.so loaded for "Team Fortress" after playing Valve logo when "Loading..." screen appears.
Got that same problem. really long loading time

Similar problem too. Although launching TF2 is longer than on Windows it is still usable. But connecting to servers/loading games is incredibly long. On Windows it takes 30 sec to 1 min to join a game (which is already quite long). On Linux, I've measured it to more than 3 min.

Both on the same computer, of course.
