What is the difference between HL2 and TF2 (performance-wise)?
As far as I'm aware they both run on the same engine, even the same version of the same engine. HL2 style graphics is a bit more outdated with smaller textures and simpler models. Both use HDR and not much else for special effects.

So TF2 has a bit more advanced graphics but only a bit. At least from the players' point of view. So why is it, that HL2DM and CSS runs absolutely fine for most people, 300 fps even everything maxed at full HD resolution, but many people struggle getting 30 fps in TF2 on the same hardware?

Pretty much. It's got thousands upon thousands more polygons to render at a time.

Still, it has thousands upon thousands less polygons to render than any modern game that came out in the last few years. Serios Sam 3 on linux runs much better for most, and it's no doubt much more demanding on the graphics card.

HL2 uses Source 2007 engine while TF2 -- Source 2009.
