Issue Report: TF2: Lots of artifacts using free radeon driver
Using the free radeon driver (Xorg-Edgers PPA, using a HD4870 + Phenom X6 on Ubuntu 12.10) there are some really serious issues with random artifacts in TF2. The main menu is flickering hard, making it difficult to change any settings, and even ingame there are some random polygons within the 3D scene that are blocking the sight, appearently changing with every frame, besides the more present GUI aritfacts acting in a similar way.

Changing the video options does not help at all, the last Xorg-Edgers updates seem to have reduced the menu flickering to a minimum, but the game itself is still rather unplayable like this.

At least performance-wise the game runs really nice, I wouldn't have expected such a good performance with the radeon driver this early in the beta.

The open source radeon and nouveau drivers aren't officially supported by this beta. You can use them at your own risk, but they are nowhere near complete and you are lucky the game even works. I have the same problem as you - I own an HD4890 which has no official drivers for Ubuntu 12.10. That's why I had to stay on 12.04 where the latest driver works (Catalyst 12.6), but even with that driver you can't run TF2 (it doesn't start). Unfortunately, this is not up to Valve, but the driver developers.

GUI artifacts seem to be fixed with Mesa-9.1 git checkout from these days and R600g driver (HD6870)

Nope, not at all. As I said: Within the menu it was reduced to a minimum, there's just a single flicker now and then, but it's still clearly there.
However, once you start a game it goes crazy just like before that helpful update, even the menu goes rampage again.

Just got a fresh Mesa update and a recent kernel, didn't change anything.
