System tray support in general seems to be missing. I'm using Xubuntu 12.10, and there's no icon in the tray there either.

In the previous version of Steam Linux Beta (before the last update) was present, at least in Unity...

The Steam icon isn't in the system tray for KDE as well.

Even I didn't experienced it with KDE, I experienced it only with Unity

It's funny, since under Wine the tray icon works perfectly. ;)

I didn't see it under 64-bit but do with 32-bit (Unity, 12.04), unless Steam updated to have notification area support when I switched.

In KDE (Kubuntu 12.04) I don't see the icon, only a "iconless" replacement (in systray). In Arch Linux, there is no icon at all in the systray.

If I'm not wrong is an issue with the 64-bit...
chäeMil [cz] Linux Dec 6, 2012 @ 3:16pm
yes because it depends on some 32bit libraries which at this time is not multiarch...

Here on Arch multilib (64bit), there's no tray icon too :/

Tested in Gnome Classic. I can see it just fine.
