Issue Report: Voice chat crashes TF2 intermittantly
Running Arch Linux with pulseaudio.

Voice chat works fine, but occasionally hangs TF2. TF2 will resume a moment later, and then Steam crashes, and TF2 dies a few moments after that.

It seems to occur most often immediately following your player's death, or when other loud sounds are happening as the voice button is keyed.

Which desktop environment are you using?
Lucky Crocket [MicS] Nov 28, 2012 @ 12:41pm
Hi Frank - I'm actually using a simple tiling window manager, i3. I can test something else if you like.
Bumbero Nov 28, 2012 @ 4:14pm
I'm experiencing the exact same issue on Ubuntu 12.04. I've experienced two crashes today while dead and using voice chat.

Anyone else seeing this issue?
TheLamer Dec 8, 2012 @ 2:34pm
Yeah this is happening to me too, I am avoiding voice chat for now. What seems to happen is the steam window is killed first then the overlay gets all jacked up (duplicate overlays etc 3d stuff is fine) in TF2 then the TF2 program will die out shortly after.

Steam dies:

Precisely what I'm seeing as well, TheLamer.
Jengajam2 Dec 11, 2012 @ 1:51pm
I can also confirm this, on Ubuntu 12.04 x64, with the exact same symptoms and errors.
RobbieThe1st [Linux] Dec 11, 2012 @ 7:48pm
I can confirm this, on Debian Unstable, AMD64.
See: http://steamcommunity.com/app/221410/discussions/0/882966057032293824/ - It's been happening since I first played TF2 on Linux, but has gotten better with recent updates. Still happens once in a while though.

It appears to me that the problem is TF2 using all of it's available virtual memory allocation(32 bit process = absolute maximum 4GB space), and when Pulse tries to allocate another bit of buffer for audio, it crashes due to an out of memory error.

I would expect the solution to be either releasing a 64-bit version, for a practically unlimited memory space, or tweaking the cache algorithm to leave a few extra MB free for Pulse.

That all being said, if you guys have some suggestion on how to test it further, let me know - I'm reasonably experienced with Linux and would like to help in any way I can.
RobbieThe1st [Linux] Dec 15, 2012 @ 9:06pm
I want to give this topic a bit of a bump; still happening after this last update.
Jengajam2 Dec 16, 2012 @ 10:32am
I also second RobbieThe1st; the problem has not changed in the least.
Also, this same problem occurs on the Windows and Mac OS X versions of TF2, though with much less frequency.
Think Box Dec 23, 2012 @ 1:47am
After updating the Steam Client and installing TF2 (non-beta), I started seeing this same error. The error can occur in-game, in-menu or even just in the Steam Client.

Running on Fedora 17 x86-64 with the Intel HD 3000 video card and 8GB of ram.

Is steam and tf2 crashing? Anyone have crashids? Thanks.
RobbieThe1st [Linux] Jan 10, 2013 @ 8:04pm
Last weekend when I played, it still was. Tomorrow, I'll play it a bunch and give you some crash IDs.
That being said, I'm not sure it'll help - Last time I was in the system information window, under 'recent crashes', I saw a bunch of crash IDs and "uploaded: no" for all of them. This makes me think something's not configured right; if the dumps aren't uploaded, you won't be able to use the crash IDs, right?
RobbieThe1st [Linux] Jan 11, 2013 @ 8:50pm
OK, here's a report for you:
I was playing 2fort, 12v12 game. A spy tried to stab me, along with a few explosions and voice clips playing, the game froze and crashed a moment later.
Note that only TF2 crashed; steam didn't. Back when this topic was created, Steam would crash as well, but now it usually tends to continue running.

Here's what's in the console:
Uploading dump (in-process) [proxy '']

Seeing as it isn't uploaded, I ran the dmp file referenced above through base64, the contents of which is here:
