Man, it's a desktop card, no optimus anything. I have a similiar problem here, and I'm on a desktop (an i5-2400 with a GTX550Ti). The driver gets installed ok, but it seems Steam is not using nVidia's OpenGL but rather a generic or mesa's GL, as you can see by Steam detecting OpenGL as version 1.4 rather than 4.3. I'm using nVidia's 310.19.

I believe I've now gone through all the drivers in the universe repo;

Currently only 310.14 (nvidia-experimental-310) or 310.19 (straight from nvidia) gives me a working kernel - any of the drivers mentioned I can't even boot past splash.

I get the glGetError thrown with either driver that allows me to boot past splash.

Should probably add this too:

http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/xorg-edgers currently has 310.19 for 12.10.

Running the .run from Nvidia I had issues with, the PPA seems to work very nicely, yay!

Remove your old drivers first:

sudo apt-get remove [nvidia-whatever-you're-using] && [nvidia-settings-whatever-you're-using]

Add PPA & install 310.19

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current nvidia-settings
sudo reboot

I am using ArchLinux and I had this exact same problem and in my case, as suggested by @Shark, it was indeed because my system was using libgl rather than Nvidia's implementation of OpenGL.

If you are like me and using ArchLinux +nvidia drivers you can try to resolve this by first removing any other graphics drivers that may be installed that are not nvidia's drivers (so your intel, nouveau, etc...). This will hopefully eliminate drivers that depend on libgl and try to install them when you update your system in future. Then (re)install your nvidia driver, nvidia-utils (this should tell you it is going to remove libgl as they are incompatible which you want to do). If you are using x86_64 you will also need to install the lib32-nvidia-utils.

After I did this I rebooted and my mouse stopped working (as I boot directly into GDM so this was a pain). So I suggest before you do reboot you may want to use nvidia-xconfig to re-generate a new config. This fixed my problem.
