Issue Report: "Activate a product on Steam" wizard attempts to install Windows games
I just added Hitman: Absolution to my Steam account with the Linux client. After the process was done, Steam opened the "install game" dialog even though this game isn't available on Linux. Maybe that shouldn't happen.

Same issue when activating Natural Selection 2 key with linux client. I was supposed to download the game.
Abort Install did not abort activation. The game was ready to download in windows.

ditto. I had the same happen for Titan Quest.

I have this problem, too. I just attempted to activate games from the Humble THQ Bundle (great deal, BTW!) on Steam. It attempted to install the games, and since they weren't listed in my Library, I couldn't cancel the installation; I could only pause it. When I tried to exit Steam to stop the downloads, it refused to quit, and I had to try a number of killall commands to make it exit. "killall MainThrd" did the job.

Note: after several restarts, Steam is still trying to install those Windows games (spefically, Company of Heroes and CoH: Opposing Fronts). I'm now running a "grep" on the entire Steam folder to see if i can find an editable file that's telling it to download them. Fingers crossed...

Workaround: Edit ~/Steam/config/config.vdf and delete two stanzas. Here's what grep came up with for that file:

config/config.vdf: "installdir" "/home/dane/Steam/SteamApps/common/Company of Heroes"
config/config.vdf: "installdir" "/home/dane/Steam/SteamApps/common/Company of Heroes"

(Also: "Binary file appcache/appinfo.vdf matches")

So, close Steam and open config.vdf and look for one of the above two lines. Just above each line, you'll find a 4-digit (I think it's always 4-digit) number for the app, followed by a "{", the line from grep (containing "installdir"), and some other stuff. You need to delete the app number's line, and any lines before the next app number. The final line you delete should end int "}". Do this for both games (i.e. 2 stanzas). In my case, each stanza had 5 lines, not counting text wraparound. The next time I opened Steam on Linux, it didn't try to download the Windows-only games.

Now, go into your Steam folder and delete the folders pertaining to the Windows games. You're done!

Hopefully Valve will put a "proper" fix on this soon, but until then, try the above. (Alternatively, click "cancel" after the game is activated, so it won't try to install it on Linux.)

Cheers!

There is other way. Open your Library, select "ALL GAMES", open context menu on your game (right mouse click) and select "delete local content". This will stop the downloading and clean up disk, but doesn't make request for "gui fix" any less valid.
You still have to manually clean up some garbage in [...]/Steam/SteamApps/common.

Good call, Orzo. I feel a bit silly. :-) Still, needing to clean it up manually, plus the initial attempt is noteworthy.
