Issue Report: Steam hangs when opening a menu
When I try to open a menu (Steam, View, ...) most of the time (but not always) the application hangs. A transparent window appears, but then nothing happens any more, and I have to kill the application. The hang appears on both KDE and Unity. A screenshot can be found here[taburett.ch]. It may or may not be related that I keep getting the following warning messages when running steam from the terminal:

(steam:5243): Gtk-WARNING **: A floating object was finalized. This means that someone
called g_object_unref() on an object that had only a floating
reference; the initial floating reference is not owned by anyone
and must be removed with g_object_ref_sink().
/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64

(steam:5243): Gtk-WARNING **: Failed to load type module: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/menuproxies/libappmenu.so
and
surface_opengl.cpp (564) : Assertion Failed: glIsTexture( id )
surface_opengl.cpp (845) : Assertion Failed: !"Current texture not set"
surface_opengl.cpp (505) : Assertion Failed: GetTextureForString failed

So far I haven't been able to reach Steam's system information window due to this bug, but I'll provide a summary of my system: It's a Laptop running Ubuntu 12.10 with the nvidia-experimental-310 driver. The graphics chip is a Nvidia GT218, the processor an Intel Core i7 620m, with 8 GiB of RAM. For more details see the output of lshw[taburett.ch].

I had a similar issue until steam updated today. I can now resize the window and pulldown all menus.

Can confirm this for Ubuntu 12.10 on 12.04 i didnt encounter this bug yet, so its likely a 12.10 only problem.

Yes, I can confirm that on my PC, which has an AMD graphics card and processor and Ubuntu 12.04, I can use the menu just fine.

With the newest update, the hang seems to be gone. However, it now has problems rendering some text. I'll open a new thread for that problem.
