Issue Report: Team Fortress 2 In-game Text Problem
As seen by this screenshot, many characters are completely missing.
The same occurs during any input to the chat box, and also the notifications of deaths/kills during the game.

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=107997963

As for menu interface, there is no problem, just in-game.

I should also mention that it isn't a permanent problem, as usually after a complete system restart, the issue is gone, though a day later can come back.

I have the same crosshair problem from time to time, and ammo or health is dissapearing as well.
I haven't been able to find any solution to the text problem in scoreboard/death notices. Disabling multicore rendering doesn't change anything for me.
AnAkkk Nov 20, 2012 @ 12:52pm
According to someone, this would be caused by mat_filtertextures set to 0 instead of 1. I may have it in my autoexec.cfg. I won't be able to check until this weekend though.
mikesart Nov 21, 2012 @ 5:02pm
Have people been seeing this with the last update? I have not been able to get this to repro on nVidia with the 310.14 drivers. And are the details the same for everyone? It goes away after a reboot, then comes back a couple days later and continues that way until the next reboot? Thanks.
Bumbero Nov 21, 2012 @ 8:09pm
I'm still seeing this exact same issue. Using the experimental AMD drivers. Crosshair also disappeared. I took a look at what my mat_filtertextures was set to as mentioned above, but it is set to 1.

I have yet to try rebooting to see if it goes away, but it does persist between restarts of TF2.

I am getting it all the time, it doesn't go away after a reboot. I still haven't been able to test with mat_filtertextures 1 though.

Same here, seems to be a special unicode characters problem. They are not printed

Special unicode character (like the ones on my nickname) are not shown:
- On killing notice (top right)
- On scoreboard / MVP scoreboards
- On chat
- On developer console
In addition the nickname is completely missing. Check screenshot for example http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=109511730

I don't think it's only special characters. IIRC it's random, any character might not show up.

Latest update - still happening randomly to me: Screenshot

If it helps - this bug actually appeared long ago, when I used wine to start TF2 and Garrys Mod. They both had this bug.

Well, I don't know why, but I just tried again and I no longer have the issue.
I had an update of some packages in xorg-edgers today - maybe it could be related, or maybe not.
And it looks like my mat_filtertextures has always been set to 1.

EDIT:

The issue came back. Seem random after all..

Today I again had the issue, but it didn't seem as bad.
Very few characters were missing, so it looked fine until I noticed the mistake on a friends name in-game.
Frank Nov 29, 2012 @ 3:57pm
Is anyone still missing characters in-game?
