Issue Report: No system tray integration
Yes, I am filing this as an issue, as menu's integrated to the system tray are part of Ubuntu. Since you are targetting Ubuntu only initially, it would be seen as fitting to provide native support to basic things such as that.
Also, an indicator widget for Steam would be really good. Since Steam installed under WINE has a widget, it feels like missing functionality.
Sorry if I sound like a bit of a prude as well, I am just a fan of sticking to platform standards.

Thanks! This issue has been assigned tracking ID 93744.
Agreed, Steam/WINE has tray icon, but this native Linux version does not.
I'm using XFCE and this causes Steam to go completely invisible to the desktop if the main window isn't visible, and it isn't handled well by anything but the main UI (Large mode). Example:
  • Start steam with normal Large mode GUI
  • Click X in the window, window minimises to task bar instead of systray
  • Unminimise window, switch to Small mode
  • Click X in the window, window completely disappears
  • Double click Steam launcher on desktop, nothing happens
  • Manually run "steam steam://nav/games", Large mode window pops up
I think a possible reason they left it out was that they probably felt the one Unity icon was enough. It would be nice to see a tray icon though, that has the same function as it does in Windows.
We intend to have tray icon support. The issue is that Steam is a 32 bit application and can't list libappindicator1:i386 as a dependency on 64 bit systems, because this library is not yet multi-arch aware.
No tray on Mint 14 x64, Cinnamon

I get a tray icon on my odd Ubuntu come Mint install (32 bit) but I still get a taskbar entry when minimized or closed... That annoys me, but if there's no tray icon on 64 bit it could be hard to get back if the taskbar entry disappeared :P

I've installed libappindicator1:i386 on my 64-bit Kubuntu 12.10 (with KDE 4.9.4 from Kubuntu Updates PPA) manually. Now when I launch Steam, an icon appears in my system tray but behaves weird:

1. It does not show proper Steam icon.
2. Left click and double left click do nothing.
3. Right click pops a menu but it takes about two seconds to appear.
Here is how it looks like: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=112640848
Steam is the icon with the red border around.

I'm seeing the same as the image above with 32 bit Kubuntu 12.10 and KDE 4.9 beta 2.
Same on openSUSE 12.2 x86 with KDE 4.8.5

IMHO, it would probably be better to avoid using non-standard stuff like that. You should use the System Tray Specification specified here : http://standards.freedesktop.org/systemtray-spec/systemtray-spec-latest.html

+1; libappindicator is really a bad choice and can cause a lot of problems...
