I attempt to open the Steam client by any method, including the icon on the desktop in the applications menu, and the command line and the client doesn't open.

Here is the output of the command line attempt:

System Specs:

Memory: 3096MB (1866MB used)
Operating System: Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 3450

Do you have the experimental AMD video driver installed? If so, purge it. I had the same problem and purged the exp. driver and now Steam launches. Hope that helps.

I'm using the AMD Drivers but I can't tell if I am using the experimental or not.

I have removed all AMD packages expect xserver ones and it still doesn't work.

did you install ia32-libs? It seems that you have a 64-bit system, and from what I know, steam is still 32-bit (so you need the 32-bit libraries for it to work). Also, make sure that the latest AMD drivers are installed. If you want to be truly bleeding edge like me, you can add the xorg-edgers PPA. just google xorg-edgers and you should get the newest drivers.

P.S. The AMD drivers may be glitchy. I wouldn't know since I use nVidia. Before putting xorg-edgers, just try the normal fglrx drivers from Ubuntu's repositories.

I am on a 32-bit system actually. I installed the fglrx drivers and still had the same issue. I will try the xorgs next.

What's really weird is that line 245 of the steam.sh script is inside of a loop that should only be executed if you're on OSX/Darwin.

I have tried both drivers and steam still fails with the steam error each time. What else could it be?
