Screenshots with Steam - F12 - cause it to crash most of the time and has been reported:

If kernel compiled with such support you could use Ctrl + Alt + SysRq (which is on Print Screen button) + E
This could terminate all running processes to runlevel 0.
Worth trying. Don't know if it's compiled into Ubuntu kernel.
Maybe some logs could be seen then.

It also has to be enabled:

# where nano is whatever editor you use sudo nano /etc/sysctl.conf*

And set: kernel.sysrq = 1

Or for a one off:

sudo -i echo 1 > /proc/sys/kernel/sysrq

I use F11 to save screenshots, those will be in ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/Serious\ Sam\ 3/Temp/ScreenShots .

Please post your Sam3.log file, so we can know more about graphical glitching.
For screenshots use F11 like Kano said until the issue with Steam's screenshot handler is fixed.
