Initial Impressions
Just wanted to share my initial impression of the Linux Beta. The first thing I had to do was move a few of the steam related directories around. I have my home directory mounted on a (somewhat) small partition. There was not enough space to install anything but steam itself there so I ended up doing the following...

I moved the ~/.steam directory to a partition with plenty of space and then symlinked that back to my home directory. I did the same with the ~/.local/share/Steam directory. Once that was done I had enough space to install TF2. I like a few others who have an ATI(AMD) Radeon video card got the OpenGL version problem. I will install the latest AMD drivers from their website to see if that fixes my problem....I'll update this post to let everyone know if that fixes my issues.

Here are my system specs from the Steam application...

I can't tell you how excited I am about the prospect of being able to run and play Steam games in Linux (It would be nice to not need that "other" operating system :>) I hope that most game makers get onboard with porting their games to run under OpenGL/Linux.

More updates as I test....

When I tried tf2 i had to install the opengl s3tc extension. (libtxc_dxtn.i686) this was on fedora. As for the space this could be rectified by letting us change the library directory in steam. This feature is not enabled yet. You can add the folder but can't choose it for install.

Thanks for the info. I have a Radeon HD 4850 card and I just installed the latest AMD video drivers (12.6-legacy) and I still have the same problem. I will see if I can get the s3tc extension installed to see if that fixes the issue.

Nothing will fix the issue, Radeon HD2000-4000 users are screwed (at least for now). The only thing you can do is uninstall fglrx and add the xorg-edgers PPA with the latest open source drivers and hope it doesn't break your system.

Yeah...I figured as much after I installed the x64 version of libtxc_dxtn and had the same issue. I'm feeling brave....I think I'm going to install the open source drivers and keep my fingers crossed. It's no big deal if my system gets trashed....I built a new install of Mint to test Steam anyway...and reinstalling is no big deal if I don't care about saving anything.

Well...the open source drivers work....mostly. I am able to launch TF2 but there are a TON of artifacts and glitches.... I also can't seem to get my LCD monitor running at it's native resolution...but I haven't tinkered with it too much (I just hate futzing with X config files)! I guess this is a good excuse to get a new video card for X-mas!!

Recent Failure Reports:

I did the installation by hand extracting the deb package provided.
No jockey for third-party driver manager since it is not available
on Fedora yet. There is some repo here :
ftp://mirror.linux.org.au/pub/kororaa/releases/17/
but I prefer to manage my nvidia driver through rpmforge via akmods
This shields me from kernel updates which on Fedora are quite often.

Here is a summary of what I've tried so far :

And Yet It moves - Works

The Book of unwritten tales The Critter Chronicles Demo - Works if started via cli. This is a reported issue. When I click in Settings the game segfaults.

World of Goo Demo - Works

Cogs - Works

Trine 2 - Works in both Single/Multiplayer except the minor issue
regarding the initial settings dialog.

Waveform Demo - Works
