Issue Report: Fatal Error: Steam failed to load
when i start Steam now, i'm getting a window popping up that says:
Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xffa8c230) failed with error 1: CMultiFieldBlob(pSerialized): Partial field header at end of record
with an OK option to click on... after that, it closes.
this is the entire terminal output from it:

I just got pretty much the same thing. Mine happened after the interface locked up and I had to kill the process. Now it does that on every start-up. Seems like maybe some configuration was in the middle of writing, and now that config file can't be read properly? I'm going to try clearing out a bunch of my steam config files and see if that helps, if it doesn't I might just have to kill my .steam folder...

Ok, solved it. The problem was originally caused by me running out of disk space while installing TF2 (derp), then I fixed it by removing ~/.local/shares/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob now steam starts just fine.

Confirming (Archlinux, XFCE). Happens every time on launch since the client updated.

EDIT: deleting ClientRegistry.blob from ~/Steam fixed it for me as well

well, i deleted ~/Steam entirely and when prompted, clicked reinstall upon starting it again, but i'm sure bucaneer and startistic's solutions work just as well... thanks guys!

Happened to me too after I had to kill steam when it hung after resuming from suspend. Was also loading tf2 at the same moment.

Same here, except I made sure enough space was available (3.5GB more than what Steam said). Anyway, removing ~/.local/share/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob fixed it for me too. Thanks for the solution!

EDIT: Weird, yesterday it told me it needed around 7.5GB to install TF2; today it tells me it downloaded 5.7 of 12.2GB.

I'm seeing this issue as well. Running standard Ubuntu 12.04 64bit with NVidia.

Edit:
Removing ~/.local/shares/Steam/ClientRegistry.blob worked for me.

I notice that I kept receiving a message that the steam servers were too busy to handle my download request. This persisted for 2 days until I restarted my steam client.
When I restarted my steam client, I began receiving the "Fatal Error: Steam failed to load: *SteamStartEngine(0xffa8c230)" message.

I'm not sure if the two messages are related, but I suspect users may see an incorrect error about busy servers, when the ClientRegistry.blob is corrupted.
