Issue Report: Serious Sam 3 FPS regression with transparent textures
At least, I think the cause might be transparent textures. I took 2 screenshots in the "The Spider's Nest" level (at the part right after Sam gets the dead guy's mobile phone). The pics were taken while not doing anything in the game. Check the framerate.

Frame drop is actually more around 55, not 47. I think taking a screenshot made it drop a bit more.

Also, this is just as simple example to show how just one transparent texture already makes such a big difference in performance. When there's a lot of particles, especially dust effects (after destroying some furniture), the FPS regresses a lot more.


Tested with Compiz and Xfwm4, no difference. I run the game on my NVidia card (GT540M) using primusrun. Further system specs:

Performance seems a little bit better overall when using a non-composited window manager (tried Openbox). However, I might be mistaken, as I just tested around in that fairly FPS-light dark area.

As mentioned elsewhere, we don't guarantee anything for Intel GPUs at this stage. Driver needs more work. Until then, you are more or less on your own. It does work great for some people but guess stars have to align. :(

Alright, but this was actually tested on the NVidia GPU using bumblebee and primusrun (well-performing successor to optirun). Does the Intel driver still factor in then?

You could post the log file, but the setup in itself is not officially supported. With only that NV card, the problem should not appear.

I think, you're right. Intel GPU has nothing to do.
But Bumblebee uses VirtualGL and an image compression method https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Bumblebee#Optimizing_Speed_when_using_VirtualGL_as_bridge
Image compression/decompression need CPU power, which is different for different scenes. Notice that framedrop01.jpg is 350 kB and framedrop02.jpg is 250 kB. First image need much more CPU power, I think.

Could you try uncompressed method:

Well, even though this is bumblebee, I use primusrun and not optirun. primusrun does not use VirtualGL[www.webupd8.org] and instead renders things much more directly, and I can really notice it in the performance (it's much, much better than optirun). Just wanted to point this little performance thing out, which could be a graphics driver thing, something in bumblebee or primusrun or perhaps a bottleneck in SS3...

EDIT: also, VGLTransport was already set to proxy, apparently.

The difference in FPS is usually fairly minor, too, but it is consistent nonetheless.
If I had a pure NVidia system, I would gladly try it out on that... but unfortunately, I don't.

Alright. Which log would that be? The terminal output? It doesn't output anything interesting during gameplay, but maybe it's useful to check how much OpenGL stuff is supported when running under primusrun, I guess?

But I repeat - the setup is not supported officially. If you can determine that it really is a problem with the game, and pinpoint exactly what, then we can perhaps fix it. But _by default_ for any custom windowmanagers, driver replacements, etc... please first go to the maintainer of those and determine whether there is the problem. We are very happy to work withing the open environment, and we like it ourselves that things are customizable. But you have to understand that we cannot test and maintain all the zillions of setups users can come up with. :) We test for some most often used combinations that are more or less official and stable.

If you are using something off the beaten track, and encounter a problem, we can help with advice if something comes to mind, but we won't be recreating the same config in our office and debugging that. There's just not enough time and resources for that. Thank you for understanding.

Yeah, you're right. Especially if the FPS drop doesn't happen on a regular NVidia setup, I'd better check with the bumblebee project et al.

I will post the log though, just in case it helps any at all.
(Note: this is just the last running log where I didn't bother to set my power governor to performance... ondemand still seems to perform more or less the same for me, though.)

I have to point out here that FPS might not be related to transparent/translucent texture at all. I mean, you look at different direction, which means that completely other set of things is rendered.
