AMD drivers on linux are simply no where near as good as on windows. And people say that even the windows drivers aren't that good.

Here is a post regarding gameplay on AMD, Intel and NVIDIA from one of the devs.

"- On ATI it is still slower than on Windows. But it is getting there soon I hope."

I did some benchmarking and found on my system with a Radeon HD 6950 I got an average of about 42 FPS in Linux and 69 FPS windows directx, however with opengl under windows I only got 44 FPS. It makes me wonder if the ATI cards - or drivers - are optimized for directx. Although it could just be SS3 is more optimized for directx, or my benchmarks are atypical for some reason.

if you are using unity there is at least 20% performance drop compared to gnome shell. on radeonhd 5450 i'm getting 50-100 fps on gnome shell compared to 20-30 fps while starting from unity.

And how is 50-100 vs 20-30 a 20% drop?

And is that with or without unredirected fullscreen windows enabled?

my bad, wrong math. so on average:

cinnamon 9 fps.
unity 21 fps
gnomeshell 44 fps
xfce 49 fps

so if we take xfce as base (100%) we get
gnome shell 10% drop,
unity 57% drop
cinnamon 81 % drop

but thats just for my PC. i did no fancy tweaking, everything was left on default.

Use openbox, Luke!

But Openbox has a bug where the game loses focus every time you get a Steam Overlay message! Or at least, I do.
