Issue Report: Steam freezes during TF2 download
When I begun my Team Fortress 2 download earlier today, I left my computer to do some work. I came back, and Steam was completely unresponsive with the download stuck at the 7% mark. I attempted to shut the process in System Monitor, but was unable to. I had to restart the computer. After a restart the download resumed from 18% (graphical issue? Steam must have continued downloading despite the image freezing), and currently I am at 76% without any further issues. Perhaps it may have happened because the computer locks itself and asks for a password when I return? I will leave the computer for a little while again, and see if I can recreate it.

UPDATE: Yep, managed to recreate it. After having to unlock the computer for the 2nd time, Steam is unresponsive again, with the download at 95%. And as before, I can't seem to kill the process via System Monitor and will need to restart.

It happens to me when I use metacity as window decorator, but if I use compiz, no more freezes.

I also had the same error, but I am using compiz

I had the same behavior in Kubuntu 12.10 64-bit with the 304 NVIDIA driver on a Geforce 460M. I had Steam minimized and my desktop locked. After unlocking my desktop and trying to unminimize the Steam window, the Steam window didn't render. However, when alt+click+dragging I was able to move an area of my screen where the Steam window was. I could also resize it with alt+right-click+drag, but the contents of the window always just displayed what was on the screen before.

I'm running into this as well at the moment. The whole GUI repeatedly hangs while attempting to download TF2, both the main Steam window and the friends list window. When I kill Steam and restart it the progress percentage for my TF2 download has increased compared to the frozen number it was displaying, so it seems to continue downloading in the background despite the frozen GUI.
