Got the same problem too.
It USED to run fairly well (almost bugless), and then 2 days ago it won't start at all for some reason.
Ok, today I've tried again to run it manually after installing some libogre :
sudo apt-get install libogre-1.7.4
and manually running : Steam/SteamApps/common/The Book of Unwritten Tales/bout.sh

Seems to run again.
Tried installing that and getting the same exact error as before.
I seem to have the same problem. Running kAGE with GDB with
LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib/32/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH gdb ./bin/32/kAGE
gives
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0xf57f6eb0 in Ogre::GLXGLSupport::refreshConfig() () from ./lib/32/RenderSystem_GL.so

Don't hesitate to PM me for more information.

I am running Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit with AMD driver 12.11 (9.010). Full system information:

I also have this problem. I am running KDE and when trying to start the game I wouldn't get anything in the steam log. I found when running the bout.sh script is was asking for gksudo which doesn't exist in KDE, the equivalent is sudo. The scrip is small and just wanted the ia32-libs installed. So I manually installed it with the the console with the command line:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

Now when I try and run it from steam it still won't start but I get the following console output:

Interesting, so it appears to not be related to the graphics driver, as you are using an NVIDIA card.

It might be a related to the fact that we are using Ubuntu 12.10 (64-bit).

@d10sfan: which Linux distribution are you using?

If I have some time, I'll install Ubuntu 12.04 and see if that works.

I tried it with Linux Mint 13 and 14 (based off Ubuntu 12.04 and Ubuntu 12.10)
En son d10sfan tarafından düzenlendi; 3 Ara 2012 @ 6:50
Was that a 32-bit or a 64-bit install?
Both were 64-bit
Here is my workaround for Ubuntu 12.10 on x86-64:

Step 1: Change directory to The Book of Unwritten Tales $ cd ~/Steam/SteamApps/common/The\ Book\ of\ Unwritten\ Tales/ Step 2: Start the game in gdb $ LD_LIBRARY_PATH=./lib/32/ gdb ./bin/32/kAGE Step 3: Set a break point in the problematic function that will jump over the bad code (gdb) break Ogre::GLXGLSupport::refreshConfig if !($eip = $eip + 1056) Step 4: Confirm that you will set the break point on a pending symbol Make breakpoint pending on future shared library load? (y or [n]) y Step 5: Run the game (gdb) run

This workaround is super fragile and will likely break if and when KING Art updates libOgre.
The workaround allows me to start the game, but it crashes when I try to open the settings menu:
Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0xf6f19237 in std::string::assign(std::string const&) () from /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libstdc++.so.6

This is probably due to the configuration not being detected ;)

If somebody from Steam or KING Art is reading this, could you acknowledge that you are able to reproduce the problem?
Yes. Opening the setting menu with the workaround also crashes the game for me. I was, however, able to play through the prologue without problem.
Same here ;) Like the game by the way.

I do see a line on the right side of my screen with the starting movie, does anybody else have that to?

When going through that code, the only possible segfault that I can see is the element accesses on mVideoModes at lines 289 and 290.

I'm going to compile a 32-bit debug version of the library and debug to see if that really is the problem.
