TF2 - "Training" options (tutorial + offline practice) cause crashes
Hello! It seems that I'm able to start a server and join other multiplayer servers, but when I try to launch either of the Training options from the main menu, TF2 ends up crashing once it gets to the Chalkboard graphic. The GUI freezes for a few tens of seconds (during which I can't opt to skip the movie, etc) and then dumps me back to my desktop. I'll post the full console messages at the bottom, though I'm not sure which are relevant and which aren't. It's not the tutorial movie itself which causes the problem, since the movie while starting a server seemed to play just fine.

Fedora 17 x86_64, binary nVidia drivers 304.51 (yeah, I know I should probably track down that newer 310 version)

The full console output:

owh i have same exact issue
apocalyptech Nov 22, 2012 @ 1:22pm
Well, my "I know I should probably track down that newer 310 version" comment turned out to be entirely accurate. I hopped onto nVidia driver version 310.19 and it looks like that solved this particular issue (and a few other minor things which have been mentioned elsewhere on the forums.)

So yeah, sounds like the 310 driver is a must for nVidia users. Works for me, now!
apocalyptech Nov 22, 2012 @ 2:23pm
Hm, actually I'll take that partially back... It seems like I do still get the crash when going into Training, but only if it's the FIRST thing I try to do after starting TF2. It seems to work fine when I first start my own server, play around for a bit, and then disconnect. I was able to go in and complete the Soldier training after doing so, whereas when I had gone directly into the Soldier training after starting, I had gotten the crash at the chalkboard.

Possibly it was like that even on the older drivers, though I'm pretty sure I had tried going in there post-multiplayer. Anyway, there's one possible workaround for anyone else still experiencing that.
apocalyptech Nov 22, 2012 @ 11:35pm
Apologies for the multiple-posts-in-a-row, but I'm actually no longer sure that my previous "workaround" does anything. After some more post-Thanksgiving-gluttony testing, I had numerous times where TF2 would lock up for me at the chalkboard, when starting my own server, and when I did finally get into an Offline Practice mode, I don't think I had tried starting my own server first.

So, I'm guessing that this might actually be something totally unrelated to any of this, where sometimes it'll Just Work, and other times it'll Just Crash. Perhaps it's related to some subtle thing I'm doing on the menus to launch stuff, or maybe it's pseudorandom based on something else going on in my system. Alas!

I have just installed TF2 (never played before) and can confirm that the same behaviour occurs for me on Ubuntu 12.04. I'm using the the 304.48 nVidia driver as the 310 version currently doesn't work on my system.

My TF2 installation has just updated and the game loads past the training video and I could move around and begin the target practice. After about six targets the game then froze and segfaulted.
During the training video I noticed a large number of characters were missing from the captioned text. Console output below

Same errors as above, Linux Mint x64 (Cinnamon), 8800 GTX (310.19)

For me too, Ubuntu 12.10 32 Bit, GeForce 9600M GT with 310.14

Here, here! Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit Nvidia GT 240 1GB 310.19 drivers. I made a separate post about this in the Valve Games forum as well.

I have the same behavior, crash after trying the soldier training... I have Debian wheezy amd64 with nVidia 310 drivers, also in my Ubuntu i386 12.04LTS with 310 drivers

This isn't Nvidia specific, I also had the chalkboard crash as well with my AMD card.

Kubuntu 12.04 64-bit
AMD Athlon II X2 250 - 3.0GHz dual-core
8GB RAM
Radeon HD 5670
Driver Version: 4.2.11978

One thing I can note though is that I didn't have this happen the last time I tried to play and at that time I had nothing else running besides steam and the game. I had restarted my system and tf2 was the first thing I launched and I got through the soldier training just fine, though the first video for the target practice was just a green screen (though the sound played just fine) and I had the scrambled/missing text issue others reported. The video before the second half of the training did play fine, but with the same text issues.

This time I had Dolphin, Kate, Skype and Firefox with a lot of tabs (include several with videos) all running as well. I don't know if there may be some sort of conflict with one of those other programs that could be causing issues. Going to kill those off one at a time and keep re-trying to see if anything changes.

[UPDATE]
I decided to try it again once more before starting to kill off other programs and this time it did work. I tried the demolition training both times, but this second time the videos played and no crash. Was able to complete the remain classes' training as well without incident. So this seems pretty random, not sure what is the cause.

I just tested this on my Fedora 17 x64 system with the NVIDIA 304 driver (GeForce 210) and did NOT have the issue. I launched the game and immediately went to solider training; everything worked as expected.

Confirmed on the NVIDIA 304 driver. Works fine for me too. Good catch Recoil_84.
