Suggestions for Cross-Distro/Desktop Support
You should use xdg-su instead of gksudo. This would make it work on KDE and openSUSE.

Agreed. Fedora doesn't provide gksudo either.

No, but gksu/kdesu should be used. (k)ubuntu is preconfigured to use sudo anyway if you use those command - if you enforce sudo on other systems it just does not work when usually su is needed.

Strangely, my xdg-utils package doesn't seem to include xdg-su. This on Sabayon/Gentoo, xdg-utils 1.1.0_rc1_p20120319.

This post is really old, and steam now checks if there is gksu or kdesu and use it if not it opens an xterm with sudo

That is still a bad workaround, but it looks like is still work-in-progress.
