Latest update - unity launcher now doesn't work right
Anyone else noticed that the launcher on the unity bar now isn't where the Steam window is kept, when you launch it now creates another launcher item while it's open?

Also when you open friends another launcher appears instead of them being grouped.

Also - changelog?

Yeah, I've noted this too. Now I have to icons when steam is open, a bit boring but not a major issue... but I hope that get fixed anyway :P

Steam isn't showing up as a "?" for me, however it did start doing it after an apt-get upgrade on another machine -- and my steam friend window groups with Steam just fine for me!

What arch are you encountering this on, I wonder? I had problems with steam after testing installing it on 12.04LTS and then upgrading to 12.10 -- just wouldn't boot, even after a purge and reinstall. I tested installing it on a bare metal install of 12.10 and it ran swimmingly.

Having multiple "icons" each with different windows is probably on purpose.
The problem is distinguishing which one is which through Unity without hovering over it.

I've also encountered this issue with the latest steam update. The steam.desktop file is also not responding to StartupWMClass entries that should be used to associate the launcher with the program.

I just updated my install of the beta as well. I'm not one of the elite invited guests, so I can't comment on game play, but as far as the client goes, I get the same thing in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (64-bit). When I right-clicked and went to "Store," it said "Updating Steam Client." This window was place-held by a question mark icon in the Unity Sidebar, then turned into a second Steam icon once the download was complete. It's redundant to have the second icon there, but functionality of Steam doesn't seem to be affected.

With the latest update the Steam icon is no longer showing in cairo dock. Please fix valve!

Attempting to use xprop | grep WM_CLASS, then clicking on the main Steam window yields nothing, ergo the WM_CLASS field doesn't appear to be correctly set on the windows. This explains why StartupWMClass has no effect, at the very least. Nov 21, 2012 @ 7:32pm
Can confirm here. Would be nice if there was a proper bug tracker so we can submit bugs.

This issue is a real annoyance of mine as well, haha.
