Steam for Linux

Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.
Has anybody run into this error yet? I'm on an unorthodox setup (Fedora 17 64-bit), but I unpacked the .deb and installed the dependencies to get the executable to run. But I can't get far into the app, because I get a dialog saying "Fatal Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again." Anybody have any solutions?

Here's the console output:
$ ./steam.sh
ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt".
SteamUpdater: Error: Couldn't create cache directory /home/yuh./Downloads/steam/usr/lib/steam/package, got error 2
SteamUpdater: Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

I run Steam on Fedora 17 x64 too. I converted the .deb package to rpm with alien. Installed fine, works fine. Try it.
Try deleting the steam.sh file in your Steam directory and restart it.
I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and getting this connection error too, even running with sudo. My internet connection is working normally, but still got this issue.

After double-click the icon, Steam client begin to download updates, but reaching half of the download, the updating stops, showing this Fatal Error.
make sure steam isn't running at all
in ~/.steam/
delete steam.pid
edit registry.vdf line 29 from "Offline" "1" to "Offline" "0"

Thanks for the help, Bob! I deleted the steam.pid file, but cannot find the registry.vdf file inside the ~/.steam/ directory. I've found only the starting and bin64 files and some folders.

I'm having a similar issue on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but if you try to start it several times it begins to download some stuff, even though it stops after some time here.

The console output is not really helpful. Try running steam.sh on a Terminal, it's located on ~/.local/share/Steam. The messages I'm getting are the following:

- When it doesn't even start:
ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt". Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) SteamUpdater: Error: Download failed: http error 0 SteamUpdater: Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again.

- When it starts downloading and stops:

ILocalize::AddFile() failed to load file "public/steambootstrapper_english.txt". Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) Installing breakpad exception handler for appid(steam)/version(1.0_client) SteamUpdater: Error: Download of package (tenfoot_images_all) failed after 0 bytes (0). I'm guessing it's related to their servers... Mine has now installed correctly :)

You're right, Dan. I just realize it. I repeatedly started the Steam client and it downloaded the updates until finish, and then started normally.

Thank you all for the help. =D
Humm Guys, I have the Same Error; Im in ubuntu 12.04 LTS x86 Any solution ?
Same error here, with Ubuntu 12.10 64-bits...

Same here, Ubuntu 12.10 x64
Also had this error on Mac a long time ago...
Well, there's no real solution until now, i guess... I just keep opening the Steam Client repeatedly until the update finish (it resumes the download after shutdown).
I ran into this error when I installed Steam on my laptop through wireless. It happened during the very first download. However, luckily, I just restarted steam and everything worked out. The download seemed to resume from where it left off.

I didn't have any problem installing a second Steam on another computer. Both machines have exactly the same system and packages, except the GPU driver packages because one has HD3000, and the other has GTX260.
For me, it doesn't resume updating. It's starting download from beginning.
Having this issue on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 on an Alienware M14x. If it's something to do with the graphics card as WuJJ says, it's very plausible that my system would complain :/

Gonna try bumblebee. Not sure what else to do if that doesn't work.

I still have this issue, I run the steam installer and it downloads files for 1 or 2 minutes, then it stops and displays a message "Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again". I ran Steam several times and it can download some files, but always stops and display that message. Now im stuck and only has downloaded 13 files, always fails on a different file. Steam updater shows that still 102.795Kb

For example:
"SteamUpdater: Error: Download of package (tenfoot_images_all) failed after 0 bytes (0).
SteamUpdater: Error: Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again."

My internet connection its OK, I dont realize whats happening with the update process. HELP ME PLEASEEEE...i really want to test Steam on my linux machine...These are the files that the steam launcher has downloaded:
