Catalyst 12.10-11 driver issue
So I am at a loss here, I know this isn't specifically a steam question however I figure some of you may have experienced the same problem. I've been trying to install the 12.11 beta drivers on Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit on my M17x laptop with dual ATI 5870m chips with no luck at all. I have tried installing them with the AMD installer as well as compiling my own distribution specific packages with no luck. I kind of got them to work by installing the generic linux headers but it was painfully slow with a beta watermark. If anyone has some suggestions that would be great, I have not been able to get anything to work beyond the 12.8 drivers which are painfully slow in SS3.

same problem here with 5670 in desktop PC
I have two chance: go back to Ubuntu 12.04 or switch another distro like Arch

Actually I should have mentioned I tried downgrading to 12.04 and the same issue persists. I can install the 12.9 beta drivers in 12.04 but nothing beyond that

SS3 isn't working amazingly well with Catalyst yet, I've tried 12.10 and 12.11 beta (though on Fedora 17), both are several times slower than under Windows. They're clearly still working on it.

Well good to know, still would be nice to have the up to date drivers as I have read several posts saying they are significantly faster than 12.8

I've got the 12.11 beta drivers installed on 64 bit Ubuntu 12.10 with my HD6850 card with no extra work required. Simply used the AMD installer from the website and it runs great.

Well, yes good for you Muffinabus but it's not working on all configs.

You can use /etc/ati/control from your older driver that does not have got a watermark. Never run the amd installer without buildpkg option on newer systems.

While it's unfortunate, AMD Linux drivers have always been more or less problematic. This is why I support Nvidia (GTX 460M now).

No need to be bitter, Mr. Owl, I was simply providing my experience with having a similar setup and whatnot.

Fair enough, but it's a frustrating issue. Good to know it's no universal I suppose

I'll check that out Kano, if I can solve the speed issue

is it possible you maybe have 2 graphic cards? 1 intel and one amd/ati? in that case you might want to google about bumblebee, they have drivers configured for multiple graphic card laptops/pc's

No I have 2 ATI cards in Crossfire, which could be the issue since I doubt AMD has great notebook crossfire support as its kind of a nitche audience at this point

I'm on the 12.11 beta driver with a 7660D (A10 APU) and performance is aweful.

Do you people have the requirements installed? Like tools to build the kernel module? There should be a log file after running the installer. It's in /usr/share/ati. What does it say?
