So what DO you think about bypassers?

You remember in school when that one day you saw a bunch of other kids jumping over the fence and getting out early and you were left thinking to yourself "do I or don't I?". Probably not but whatever. That's how I see this whole bypassing business.

Anyway, I've resisted doing it because my own view is that it'd be pretty poopy of me to just intrude on what should be a closed beta, but the devil on my shoulder is absolutely begging me to just go ahead and do it.

I'll continue waiting on an invitation or the public release, but I'm curious to know how everyone else sees the bypassers. I also think we'd benefit on knowing what the powers at be intend to do about them, if anything. Is it too late now to lock them all out or sanction them?

Why sanction people who seem passionately care about the product/platform? That seems like counter intuitive.

Oh I completely agree. But counter-intuitive? When you have a closed beta comprised of 1000 hand-picked candidates, do you want unknowns creeping in? You've picked those candidates because they meet the criteria you're looking for, any extras could skew your data.

It's not like it's a significant strain on the Steam service, so I honestly don't care. I don't think Valve really cares either, or it would have been patched by now.

If valve will really not want steam working for "bypassers" (a stupid term, but I digress), they will disable it properly. Or at least ask them to stop. Has it happened so far?

In this period I really don't think that Valve may want to go against their clients. If you use an hack and you gain no advantage (and you don't damage Valve company) I think they don't ruin with their hands. Nowadays competitors are arriving or growing. And personally, if I find some hack i'll probably install it for buy my SS3 copy, so I only think to do a favour!

I have been told it's against the Terms of Service, so I don't even want to try it. It feels a bit crappy, though, that those others which haven't been selected either are already enjoying using the client but those of us who are nicely waiting as we have been told aren't getting anything for it. I can't really say I expect VALVe to give us something, that would be pretty silly, but I guess I would describe my feelings about this whole thing as "betrayed". Still, I'm glad VALVe is supporting Steam for Linux now and I will wait until the day I get permission to use it as well.

I don't know about you but I'm going to wait for the beta support, unless your really into solving errors that you may know nothing about go right ahead. But I would rather go with the beta which will at least have errors I can Google search. I don't think valve will be angry at them since It won't affect their company image if a splinter group (hackers) of a splinter group (Linux users) of a splinter group (windows users) beta tests something that has no game play value.
Also any criticism by the hackers is invalid because its not yet released, and in a beta for that matter.

You're... feeling "betrayed" by Valve because some people figured out how to run something they're not technically supposed to be able to run?

It's not like Valve's handing out $100 checks to anyone who figures out how to run Steam without being in the Beta group. There's nothing to be "betrayed" about. Valve said they were going to open it up to a closed beta and they did. What other users manage to do (or not) with the software is beside the point.

Woah, woah, woah. Linux users are a splinter group of Windows users? Excuse me? Definitely not in this beta. At least, I hope not, especially since Valve has said multiple times that they only want experienced users. You act as if no one has been using Linux until now.

Most of the people bypassing the beta protection are fairly experienced users. Hell, a lot of us are Arch or Gentoo users. And let me tell you, use one of those distros for a while and you get used to solving errors.

and no one is criticizing the client itself. Seriously, no one. What are you talking about? If you're talking about bug reports, I'd say you're pretty naive if you think bug reports aren't valid because the application is in beta.

Yeah, how dare people report bugs. Valve must be fuming that people are trying to contribute.

The thing about this beta is that Valve wasn't targeting "average Linux users" (and I use that term very loosely). They targeted hackers and powerusers.

And if you let hackers and powerusers use you're program, they're going to hack and poweruse it.

Yeah, how dare people report bugs. Valve must be fuming that people are trying to contribute.

Valve have a plan they want to stick to. Somehow I don't think that plan involves an added bunch of people, often running systems not targeted in this phase of the beta, reporting bugs in the wrong forum.

I am being very good. But i can not stand it. People can bypass it, it seems they will not be punished yet i do not do it. I must resist.

Agreed, I really don't think that Valve is interested in seeing "I'm bypassing the beta access check and TF2 won't work for me on Arch with XFCE" at this stage in the beta. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they are just paying little attention to such reports outside of the Beta forum for now.

I also think that those people aren't of much help. They don't understand how things work. Valve wants Class A support for Ubuntu first. So they selected a group of people and started a hidden forum where they can work together on fixing bugs. Now a bunch of people who installed steam with God knows which dependencies come here and yell OMG BUG BUG I FOUND A BUG!!!.

Let them discover and fix their bugs in a controlled manner. I'm using the client out side of the beta but I do it at my own risk knowing that some things propably won't work, because I don't run it in the targeted enviroment so reporting bugs would be pretty stupid.
