Steam for Linux

Why is openSUSE not on the apply for beta list ?
After all its one of the main distributions with a large following. So i find it a bit odd.

Another openSuse user here, hoping to use steam on it soon !
I second that. IMO I find suse much more convenient than debian/ubuntu and much less prone to error that could crash your system, especially since YaST can fix almost anything for you
Valve had to begin the beta test somewhere and it's a good idea to focus on one distribution in the beginning in order to fix the biggest bugs, once those are fixed the developoers will expand.

I'm also waiting for Steamed OpenSUSE ;)
Yes I too use suse, on a dual boot with windows 7 and so I too will be waiting until they have removed the distro restriction. I must say that this has to be the final nail in the windows coffin as I for one only keep windows around for gaming

There is no distro restriction. It's rather absence of official support. For now suse guys should try to resolve all the dependency issues themselves (just like Arch did)
It probably runs just fine on openSUSE. Arch repackaged it into a working installer and included all dependencies 10 minutes after that thing was released.
It does run just fine on OpenSuSE. I grabbed the .deb installer, unpackaged it and copied the contents of data.tar.gz to the system locations. I can launch Steam and log in, and from what I can see without being part of the beta, it seems to be a really slick offering.
So we/i just need to convert the .deb file to a rpm. :-) I could put it on the buildserver.

This. There was an "Other" choice and the focus is clearly on Ubuntu (which is quite logical) so these treats, besides being useless, don't really make sense because the distribution isn't really that relevant except for being "Ubuntu" or "Not Ubuntu".

Another openSUSE user here. I can confirm that the client runs well on openSUSE 12.2 x86_64 :)

Also, it is Linux. If the software runs on one linux, it will run on all the others one way or another. It may require some tinkering, but will work nevertheless.

Steam works under openSuSE 12.2, was trouble with the sound but it is impossible to fix by adding at the beginning of the startup file export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulseaudio

Hi, this is Matt from openSUSE games. You can try our unofficial, highly-experimental DEB → RPM conversion at http://software.opensuse.org/package/steam via One-Click-Install.
