Steam for Linux

Running Steam on XMonad causes infinite loop right after login
The interface never responds to mouse, and my CPU fan rotates like crazy, so I assume there's infinite loop somewhere. Anyone else tried Steam with tiling WMs?

Steam resizes itself if you make it too small. I would assume that is the problem.

Awesome, a fellow XMonad user!

And indeed, I've run into the same problem.
If you start steam in tiled mode and it loses focus, it jumps to the center of my dual-screen (TwinView) and keeps flashing its focus border like crazy. XMonad at that point gets quite a hiccup and processes input rather slowly (a couple seconds of delay)...
Same problem for me.
I'm using Ubuntu Unity and it has some issues with window management (the cursor and resize area don't align on corner resizes, etc). I think it's something Valve is probably still working on.

I have the same issue under Arch x64 and i3.
I can use the keyboard until i geht the subscribe window.

If i start with -bigpicture the mouse works correctly, but there is stil the problem with the subcribe text.
same for me with tiling in kwin.
Same problem here. In any case Steam should be run with doFloat, but without doIgnore I also get lots of flickering. And in any case, Mouse input just doesn't work....
Small edit: if you run it with doIgnore in addition to doFloat, everything works nicely except not being able to actually handle the window in xmonad anyore. But that's practical enough for now. :)

@Natanji would you mind posting the relevant bits of your xmonad.hs?
I had the same experience with Gentoo and i3. In tiling mode, the client generates enormous CPU load and while it does respond to the mouse, it registers clicks somewhere else than the mouse pointer actually is (in my case, around a hundred pixels to the bottom left). Try hovering around while and you'll see mouseover effects eventually :-)
It works fine in floating mode, though.
xmonad and tiling WMs are cool as hell but they're terrible with games, unless you have a dual monitor setup maybe.

Thanks Natanji. I was able to get the steam client to display and respond to input using your config, although I had to upgrade from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 as well.

I've using Archlinux with XMonad.

I've deactivated the "doIgnore"-Line, which is mentioned in the pasted config, only for testing, and have no problems.

I've also tested TF2 a few minutes ago, also without problems.

My system is a Notebook with Core I3 and NVidia Optimus technology.

Yeah, they fixed the XMonad issues two or three updates ago ;)
