Minor complaint: Survey assumes Ubuntu?
I have been using Linux for ~5 years, and have been writing software for that platform for 3. I don't use Ubuntu and I was surprised that when choosing "other" as my distro the only choices for my graphics driver source had references to the Ubuntu distribution mechanism. Gentoo doesn't use PPA.

Same...I'm actually mainly an Arch user.

However I chose Ubuntu in the survey as I have that as well and will happily test on it.

Really needed a multi-distro question or something at least.

IIRC, the initial release of Steam for Linux is specifically targeted at Ubuntu.

Valve have stated that Ubuntu is their first tier target for this beta. So yes, the survey assumes that you have at least one instance of Ubuntu running.

Of course that doesn't means that if I get in my first thing won't be trying to write a PKGBUILD for Arch Linux to make Steam work under it. :)

I have a bad feeling that they may only focus on Ubuntu to start to keep the noise from incompatibilities down. Linux user for 15 years here and professional software engineer for just as long.

As a Fedora user, this is kind of annoying.

I know that the initial release will be for Ubuntu but they shouldn't include other operating systems and then make some of the options in the rest of the survey ubuntu-only.

I use Debian, so it should run fine. The Ubuntu-only graphics driver options annoyed me too, I got proprietary ones through Debian's Upgrade Manager (I think, it was a few years ago).

Guys, calm the butthurt down.

Probably the point of that first question is to measure the demand for a non-Ubuntu version? Or maybe to help decide which distro will come second?

Valve wants a lot of variety for their beta test. I doubt they would limit the beta to just one distribution; at least in the long run.

You shouldn't make such a fuss about what highly seems like an error. You can't even be certain that the one who typed the survey is someone directly involved with the Steam on Linux project...

We'll see, I answered honestly by saying I use another distro (Arch here...), I do have a Ubuntu desktop too and with many years of Linux experience I hope to be selected as a beta tester. However if their selection is only based on that single question, then I'll just wait to have Steam for Linux and will feel a bit disapointed by their choice but I can't do much more about it.

Being an Ubuntu user doesn't absolutely mean you'll be a good beta tester. I would even say it can seriously be the opposite.

I'm still glad to see Steam getting involved in the Linux world.

It also didn't have "6 cores" as a CPU option, so I just put 4...

I have Debian on laptop and Gentoo on my workstation. I just filled the survey with Debian, but I wish to take Steam on both machines. Oh, well, we'll see about using two computers per user later.

I assumed that the video driver question was really "opensource via distro package manager, propitiatory via package manager, downloaded and manual install"

I put in 8... so on average we are correct.
