Ubuntu 13.10 its time to Jump Ship and swim so Linux Mint? or Kubuntu?
As a really long time Ubuntu Supporter. ( I no longer Support Ubuntu in any way do to Canonical)
i say its time to jump ship on this is one. i moved to Linux Mint (I Love the MATE Desktop) as many users have done. to me it's the only sane move as i use the PPA's Etc. Canonical's Leader Mark has fallen off his wagon this whole Mir Thing and, it really just looks like a Vendor Lock-in and, Us Developers don't need any more fragmentation. Even Kubuntu publicly said they was not going to Use Mir or Xmir but Xorg and Wayland. So Ubuntu 13.10 is not a Sane OS at all i say to 100% stay away from the Android, Microsoft, style OS

MATE Gnome KDE & maybe Xfce are all going to use Wayland

Kubuntu Developer
"A few months ago Canonical announced their new graphics system for Ubuntu, Mir. It's a shame the Linux desktop market hasn't taken off as we all hoped at the turn of the millennium and they feel the need to follow a more Apple or Android style of approach making an OS which works in isolation rather than as part of a community development method.
Here at Kubuntu we still want to work as part of the community development, taking the fine software from KDE and other upstreams and putting it on computers worldwide. So when Ubuntu Desktop gets switched to Mir we won't be following. We'll be staying with X on the images for our 13.10 release now in development and the 14.04LTS release next year. After that we hope to switch to Wayland which is what KDE and every other Linux distro hopes to do."

No Driver Support in Ubuntu 13.10
"In 14.04 we will deploy Mir but not provide the X fallback mode, and we are in active discussions with GPU manufacturers for them to support Mir in their drivers." It sounds less likely like NVIDIA and AMD will produce EGL-supported binary blobs compatible with Mir prior to Ubuntu 13.10 but rather ahead of Ubuntu 14.04 LTS next April."

Canonical's public milestones for Mir development
Ubuntu 13.10: Unity 7 with XMir on Mir by default and a fallback session to X
Ubuntu 14.04 LTS: Unity 7 with XMir as default and the fallback session removed. Canonical hopes for full Mir driver support
Ubuntu 14.10: Unity 8 with Mir stack as default, including rootless X support for legacy X applications

Update Forgot to add as of Ubuntu 12.10 it has Spyware in it "Amazon" ad's etc also this can be used by the NSA to track you and it takes your keystrokes Etc as well read the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy on it

"It's Not Just Amazon
The new version of Dash that comes with Ubuntu 12.10 introduces more than just Amazon ads. It includes a new legal notice that you can see by clicking the "i" in the corner of Dash that states that by using Dash, you automatically agree to send your search term and IP address to a number of third parties."
"Unless you have opted out, we will also send your keystrokes as a search term to productsearch.ubuntu.com and selected third parties so that we may complement your search results with online search results from such third parties including: Facebook, Twitter, BBC and Amazon. Canonical and these selected third parties will collect your search terms and use them to provide you with search results while using Ubuntu."

I'm really liking Fedora. Whilst I dont like Gnome3 that much, fedora do seem to adopt the best of the upcoming 'community' tech. Systemd, Wayland etc all have heavy backing from Fedora / Redhat.

And yeah, I'm running Mate 1.6 on Fed without too many issues at all.

This is how I used to do, with all distros. (test it on a VM beforehand)

Boot from a LiveCD, select to see all hidden content and delete everything on your /home directory except the folders you have files to save, like /Pictures, /Downloads etc.
Then, when installing the new system, point /home to the partition you have your files but don't format it.
The installation will re-create all configuration files according to this new system and will keep your data.

This seems like a crazy idea but I did this for months without problems. As I said, test it on a virtual machine before trying to do anything considered crazy.

Never had any problems - Gnomebuntu/Mint/Anything else I've tried etc.

To get back on track, I switched to OpenSUSE 12.3 and I have to admit I have been pleasently surprised - and that's from a longtime Debian- and derivatives-user.

I use Mint with Cinnamon. If you get Fedora, STEER CLEAR OF GNOME 3. It is honestly the worst desktop environment I have ever used, even worse than Unity.

Endorsing how you hate a specific DE will not make people hate it too. The beauty of Linux is the choice/freedom and people can easily migrate from a DE to another if they want to do so.

I'm on Gnome3 with Classic mode since Debian's KDE implementation is not the best. I'm liking it so far =)
