HL2 runs perfectly, TF2 awful
So ... trying to play those two games on Ubuntu 12.04.2. CPU I7-950, GPU Radeon 7800. Here's the weirdness. Whatever graphics driver I use, HL2 runs fine. Fast, smooth, not a hiccough or glitch or tear in sight. TF2, however, is slower than slow. Like 15fps slow. Basically unplayable. (FWIW, in Windows I get up to a max of 275-325fps (based on netgraph.)) As I noted, these symptoms are unchanged no matter what driver I use - the open source one or the ATI driver.

Any ideas?

I run TF2 (~playable) with Core 2 Duo (2ghz) and Ati HD4330 w/legacy-driver, so it is possible to run TF2 with your machine. Have you tried to disable TF2 multi-core acceleration or HDR? First one caused problems with CS:GO when this was published.

I wouldn't expect great performance from the open source drivers at this point.

Try changing settings in the AMD/ATI proprietary driver's Catalyst Control Center. Chances are there's something in there that will vastly improve your FPS issue.
