Why? This is waaaaay outside the scope of what Valve should be spending their time on.

This is already in the works for the Steam Box. Not sure if it will be Ubuntu based, but will be a Linux of some kind.

It is rumored the Steambox OS will be based on Ubuntu 12.04...as for a Valve/Linux OS, why would we even wan't that?

I think Phoronix said they *may* use Ubuntu core and have it boot into big picture mode. That's probably the closest we will get. Let valve do what they do best!

Yes, the "steam box OS" is based on Ubuntu 12.04.2. You can check this in the valve repo here:

With the poor integration in Linux, ports of games just using a DirectX to OpenGL wrapper, and planned capability of Steamboxen using Windows if the user or manufacturer wants...there's no point to any of this.
Let Valve do what Valve do best indeed. :-\

Sad thing is I actually emailed Gabe saying they should create their own distro of linux prior to this thread. I'd love to get me some free swag :D

Simply named Steam OS, the operating system is a highly modified Debian Linux...

I seriously hope it's true. Debian is stable and rock-solid distro.

It's true. What's going to be sweet is I can install this on an old IBM Thinkpad T61 and stream, say, CIV 5 over my wireless to my laptop. Very excited.

This is simply the repo to provide the client for Ubuntu, nothing more nothing less. They could very well have chosen something different for their own distro, which would make sense for several reasons.

[O ] - Steambox
