What is the best way to install AMD drivers for 4000 series cards

I am thinking of trying Kubuntu, and I was thinking if I was going to start fresh what is the best way to install the AMD drivers I currently don't have the best performance as it is and if I am going to start fresh anyway how can I maximize performance

From my experience with AMD the best way to install the drivers is to use the official installer and build the packages for your distribution with it, do not install it directly with the installer as that will cause problems after kernel updates.

I've tried the PPA and for the past couple months I've been using it, it works ok but I have to run tf2 at the lowest settings and even then it runs like ♥♥♥♥ I wanna have the best expirence next time help me people

Sadly, the PPA only enable the installation of AMD-legacy-driver, so this performance is what AMD give to us. Have tried Radeon driver with latests Kernels?

You could try the open source R600 driver with a new kernel (which should enable power management). However, it involves many risks, mainly:

- you could break your installation of Ubuntu
- power management might still not work (it has only just been implemented)
- performance could be even worse than with Catalyst

Anyway, if you have some time to waste, you can try it on your current installation. Make sure to remove the current PPA and fglrx, though. You can do it like this:

sudo apt-get install ppa-purge
sudo ppa-purge ppa:makson96/fglrx

First, download the newest kernel:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.10-saucy/
The files you need are: linux-headers-blabla-all.deb, linux-headers-blabla-i386.deb and linux-image-blabla-i386.deb. After you download them, install them in that order. Then, reboot your PC.

Now, you have to install the latest radeon driver from the xorg-edgers PPA:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

And reboot your PC.

EDIT: Crap, power management is coming only in the 3.11 kernel. You can try this for now and if it works, wait for the 3.11 kernel to get power management as well.

Use a ppa to downgrade Xorg, that's the only way to get AMD legacy drivers on 13.04. Otherwise you could use the open-source drivers, but performance will be lower.
