Steam on BSD

Has anyone tried running Steam on FreeBSD?

On Wine is runs of course. Natively there is no chance. Only to a certain extent you can use Linux binaries on FreeBSD like the flashplugin. You can't even get Dropbox to work on FreeBSD through the linux compatablility.

someone needs to update the linux-base for the linuxulator for steam to be executable on FreeBSD. I've seen one of the intended goals for FreeBSD 10 was the 64bit linux compatibility, at the moment only 32bit versions of software can be used.

at the moment nvidia and intel are the only supported gpu manufacturers. AMD is in the process of being ported to FreeBSD so if you're and ATI/AMD user stay away from FreeBSD atm, unless you want to run in VESA mode :) here's the link of the project https://wiki.freebsd.org/AMD_GPU

I sure hope so, it will only be logical. I don't think Sony is going to change the OS to such a degree like apple did (e.g. new kernel, new I/O stack etc) that takes years to accomplish. The only problem I could think of would lie in the graphics API (e.g. opengl, PSgl, opengl es) not too sure opengl es is in Sony's plans. If Sony will go with opengl, then apps should be pretty much compatible.

I don't think so since they don't have to contribute back like with GPL licensed code.

It is actually logical they went BSD instead of Linux (as the claims are for Valve) even though Linux is considered the "most advanced kernel" of the two, since they can make any changes and not be stung by the GPL bug or be required to "share" their changes back, which allows for all sorts of ports from companies not wanting to share on GPLed platforms. Remember that Sony has used some kind of BSD-based os ever since the PS2

true, they can keep it to themselves and not share it but for their own PR they would probably share some of it. Sony has been infamous in alienating itself with the open source community, like they did with the OS lockdown in PS3. Only time will tell which direction they will choose.

Now that I'm thinking about it. Steam would never port itself to BSD unless Valve decided to take some advantage of it. Maybe I should stick with Linux.

I'd say Linux is a better option for the desktop. The userbase is much larger and the graphics drivers on it are a lot better.

If you have a NVIDIA card that doesn't matter since Linux/BSD drivers are esentially the same.

Yes I do, and unless AMD starts getting better I plan to keep NVIDIA my primary choice on Linux.
