Thanks, Captain Obvious. We've all read Richard Stallman's rants and don't care. We're not all post-structuralists, believing that language has as much power as you seem to think it does.

The copypasta just flies right over you, doesn't it?

I would really call my system "GNU/Linux" if this name wasn't so ugly. Linux only exists as it is today because of the GNU Project, but GNU without Linux would've found a Kernel sooner or later. It's just that "Linux" is more pretty to say =)

I just call it a GNU system. =)

That's why I name my OS as the distribution's name, no GNU/Linux nonsense. You could have a BSD/Linux as well if you took away the BSD kernel (which AFAIK is possible), hence I call the OS on my system as the distro is called. End of problems.

I say GNU/Linux is to separate it from Android, which has the Linux kernel, but none of the GNU tools, and there has been confusion when people say "Android is Linux", when its really not not. IOS is closer to freeBSD than Android is to real "Linux", so the term "GNU/Linux" now has value, even if you are not a Stallmanist. (which when it comes to games, I am not)

More common are other kernels being used in distros, for example Arch and Debian both have "GNU/kfreeBSD" spins and Debian even has one for the HURD.

I just call it Linux, much easier to say, and add more to that usually just confuses people

Stallman wants credit for GNU and that's fine and he can call it what he wants. But that doesn'T mean we have to bother with this.

Sure - Linux is "just" the kernel and it is complemented by a set of GNU tools.
But there's more than just a set of Unix tools that make a system useful.

Nobody just runs a kernel and some tools. People use that to launch the stuff they actually use.

So why should we *have* to add Gnu but not Firefox or Chrome or Epihany?
And LibreOffice?
And Gnome or KDE etc....

So to give credit to everybody who has a an important role in starting my games I'd have to call this GNU/Linux/NetworkManager/Gnome/Unity/Firefox.

This whole Linux vs GNU/Linux thing is silly.
Call it what you want.

For the rest of us Linux is a well established and reasonable short name. It is *both* the name of the kernel and the name of an OS built on that kernel. Nothing wrong with that. And Stallman will have to learn to live with that (at least that most other people will not bother with GNU/Linux).
Heck - many people call it just Ubuntu, Fedora or Debian. Yet Linus seems to be able to cope with that and doesn't insist people call it GNU/Linux/Red Hat..

Even torvalds say you shouldn't call your OS "linux".

And when they say OS, they mean more than just a kernel, and when I say OS I usually mean just the kernel.
But if you're doing your OS, Linux is a central, but it's still just a small part of the overall thing - you shouldn't need to name your stuff just because you use the Linux kernel.

lets call mac osx (part opensource) the Unix/GNU/Apple/OSX/Oреrаtіng Sуѕtеm

People use the word "linux" for the whole system, have always used it. The meaning of a word is what we use it for, not what "clever people" say. Official names are important for lawyers and politicians only. If your government made a law that from tomorrow water will be called uizreithertrtopgietjertkelé, would you call it uizreithertrtopgietjertkelé from tomorrow?

Linux is easier to type, everybody knows the GNU oart anyway. You also do not need Linux to run GNU anyway.
