Very slow download speeds?
I'm seeing something odd with the Steam for Linux client. My download speed is atrocious. I'm talking 50-100KBps at best. It seems to be specific to the Steam for Linux client:

1) speedtest.net results of host machine are great;
2) The same machine running Windows has blisteringly fast downloads;
3) Changing download regions within the Steam for Linux client didn't help;
4) Restarting the Steam Client doesn't help. Pausing and restarting the download don't help;
5) The machine has been rebooted;

The machine involved is running Ubuntu 13.04 64bit w/ Steam 1.0.0.39. It wasn't a beta user but joined just to see if the beta would work.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Looks like it might involve specific Valve servers. Some games install fast - FTL, Solar 2, and Kerbal Space Program. Some take forever - Crusader Kings II, Wargame Escalation.

Thats odd cause I haven't had any issues, like you said, probably specific servers. lets see how long i last this time :-)

another thing is in your setting have you set steam to use more than 1mb a second ?

I know dirtty, he would have done that already. its not uncommon for steam servers to get bogged down.

This happened to me a few days ago, my download speeds were somewhere between 50 bytes/s-2KB/s. It's all normalized now.

I'm actually getting the same problem. I'm trying to install Garry's Mod but the Steam client does not download faster than ~80 kb/s, whatever the server I'm on. I usually download at speed rates around ~1.5 mb/s, it's kind of odd but I assume it's related to the Valve servers.

Yeah, I found the bandwidth throttle and maxxed iet out when I was tinkering with Download Regions. Plus, even if the throttle was enabled, some games exceeded it and some didn't.

Almost three days to install a game. Even floppies didn't take that long. lol

Found a lot of these in connection_log.txt:

[2013-06-04 04:07:08] [1,8] Connect() starting connection (eNetQOSLevelLow, 146.
66.152.15:27017, UDP)

Getting slapped with a low Quality of Service would nicely describe wtf was happening. Seems to have cleared now. Portal installed in minutes versus days.

Did the poor performance involve all games? Or just certain ones?

tried changing your download server to a closer one or one that may have less traffic?

hey you can download game on windows with full speed, backup it using steam builtin tool and then restore under linux. it will redownload only very small part of files and you are ready to go. worked for me!
