Latest AMD Catalyst install script for Ubuntu 12.10
I started a github repo for a simple Catalyst install script.
Just start the script and wait for finishing the install. Later I add remove and upgrade functions,

Only HD5xxx and above suported!

Run both script with sudo:
amd-ati-installer.sh - install script
amd_remove_unsupported.sh - remove the "AMD Testing" watermark (this is not my script)

You don't need my patch code when only the signature is missing. I wrote it for cards which had no control file that disabled the unsupported hardware watermark. To get rid of the testing watermark just do something like:
#!/bin/sh [] && echo -n d164ca3e4bda6f7683e01cdf18df15c3: e94afc067af75f4fb2d12eeb79f225fae351fa0608f72e22cac029ed28ed21f7: b45dfe5f2db95f40b4817ae82db921a5b356ae0f79bf0a14b4d97aed2aea73a2b457ff0f2dbb5f40b3d87ae82aba27f1b205a90e79e30a12b1d879bb2ae e73f4 > /etc/ati/signature
That's from my fglrx script that code - i usually use common/etc/ati/signature as check and add that on the fly after i used the --extract xxx option to the amd installer. But basically you could use it as addon script as well.

Have a look at Ubuntu AMD Catalyst install [www.thefanclub.co.za]. Does hardware detection and supports both the latest AMD / ATI drivers as well as offer legacy support for older cards. It also removes the watermark if you choose to install the beta drivers. Painless AMD driver updates.
