What if Half life 3 became a linux and/or steambox exclusive
This is probably been asked before but I was wondering what if valve made HL3 a Linux exclusive

Exclusive not, but 1st on Linux maybe

And what if Valve just pulled Steam for Windows and stopped supporting it.

They'd sacrifice 90+% of their sales or more if they didn't release it in Windows.

Spam, everywhere, on every Linux forum.
A lot of petitions would be created to release it for Windows.
Line (Line Is Not an Emulator) would be in a development.

And I ... would laugh.

It would be awesome for 5 seconds, and then you'd get posts like "zomg how do i install ubuntu and steam it's not working i'm getting a 'wrong architecture' error linux sucks cuz i can't figure it out in like 5 ♥♥♥♥ing minutes" all over the place

Why should they? Exclusives are almost never a good thing for us as consumers in any scenario and makes people on the short end of the stick ♥♥♥♥ed off at the ones doing it. In this case it would annoy the vast majority of users since like it or not, Windows is still the breadwinner for Steam/Valve and most other game makers.

Even in the Humble Bundle where Linux blows away the myth that we don't buy things, Windows still accounts for the lion's share of earnings.

If they released it on all platforms at the same time I'd be happy.

it would be a commercial flop but a market maker

No one would buy a console that hasn't at least 1-2 big exclusives at launch and 4-5 within the first year. If my predictions are correct, Dota 2 is gonna be the last game released by Valve that supports Windows.

They could/should make it Steam exclusive. No ports to the other consoles, but they need a Windows port for PC's. That would hopefully drive sales of Steambox which would in turn push other game publishers to demand Steambox ports of their games, since Steambox is Linux we'd automatically get a Linux PC Steam port then as well.

Ok let me put it this way. Most companies support Mac because they'll hit 3%-10% of the population for their title. They won't support Linux at 1%-3%.

Valve will support Mac who is 3% and even Linux who makes up 2% of their population running steam (atm).

So seeing they will even support a slice of the pie as small as 2% how the heck do you figure they'd cut off support for windows even if somehow they lost significant market share.

Even if best case scenario Linux hit some kind of revolution and people realized that Linux was this amazing OS and no one should ever use windows ever, keep in mind that a huge chunk of people are STILL using internet explorer as their default browser.

Some people will never change their software if it means installing something extra. Valve isn't stupid. Valve knows this. Microsoft will never lose the majority of the desktop market share. The desktop will die as a form factor long before that becomes even close to a reality.

It is hilarious some of you think Linux will go from barely even supported to somehow getting exclusive titles. One can dream I suppose.

Something they should consider when MS adopts a subscription model for their OS. Watch the mass of refugees flood Ubuntuland for Asylum. Plenty of poops and giggles to ensue.

You'd pretty much have to somehow convince the people at Valve to start hating money.

Sorry but this makes no sense to me at all. How is a Linux game exclusive to the Steambox? Making their games exclusive to Linux would still allow people to play the game on any other computer.

There are already loads of PC exclusive games. The closest Steambox is ever going to get to exclusive titles are titles that will run on any computer.

So why drop Windows support? You literally gain nothing, but lose so much.

Windows is no more only an OS, in one or two years is going to be a direct competitor of Steam. All Pc games will be available as apps inside the Windows Marketplace and those who don't want to use it will have the same problems of the developers who don't want to use Apple's App Store. Valve will lose a lot of money because of this and their last chance is to compete against Windows and bring as many people as possible to Linux.

If it gets to the point where all games are bypassing steam for Windows store then steam would die, not Windows. A linux exclusive of Half-Life 3 would not all of a sudden swing the market share to Valve's favor. Many players would simply not buy the game. Other people would dual-boot or VM before they give up their entire library for one game.

I'm as optimistic as they come when it comes to Linux gaming. But Linux exclusive AAA titles are never going to be a reality.
