Steam for Linux

A faster way?
So, today is the last day to get the Tux by loading TF2 (apparently, going by the blurb on the main linux page), and I just have some questions to ask about the system. So far, I've been trying a Linux setup with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (I don't know which bit version, but I'm assuming 64-bit) on a Wubi setup. Yesterday, I managed to get almost everything working. That is, I was slightly off by one thing: the deaded "this game is not available" message after I tried to start TF2. I tried just about everything in my power to fix it, but nothing worked. I verified the game cache, closed and reloaded the system, downloaded updates... it got to the point where I wondered if I had enough disk space. The default for when you load the system up is 16gb, so that couldn't have been a problem. Eventually, I decided to uninstall the system. I have a pretty clear picture of what I'm supposed to do, so I shouldn't have any more problems. However, there's one other thing I want to ask: is there a faster way to get TF2 on my Ubuntu disk, rather than waiting 4-5 hours downloading all of the files? I do have back-ups of all of the .gcf files used to run TF2, but I need to know where I have to put them if I want the game to run (the fact that my Ubuntu drive already recognizes my Windows Steam division on the hard disk is only making things harder for me ._.).

I would think you'd need more then 16 GB for the whole system, TF2 alone can be around 10-12 GB, and the base system it's self can be around 4-6 GB.

You can speed up the download by copying the Windows TF2 files to your Linux, or point Steam at them. Steam should then just download the other files it needs. The directory in Linux is ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/, to get there via the file manager you'll need to enable 'Show Hidden Files' or just press Ctrl + H.

Also, a Wubi install isn't the best way to go, your probably going to run into more problems.

I'm not entirely sure if I want one of these, actually. I guess I just got a little overconfident at the thought of selling one of these for the Earbuds and Max's Heads some people have been envisioning it to be worth. If I don't get one (which is looking likely), it'll still be a win for me, because I'll have gotten experience with a new operating system that I really like, and I'll have added some more technical knowlege to my daily life on the computer.

So yeah, I'm not very worried.
Linux have a harder learning curve. Learning Linux on "time trial" is a mistake, because you may feel that something "doesn´t works" when you are doing it wrong. I think that install a 12GB game and fight with crap-drivers like AMD have at this moment (it is getting better now) is useless to learn Linux. But good luck!

I recomend that, if you want to use Linux, you may give Ubuntu more than 20GB. If later you want to download a DVD, you could need some space. To use a game files you need the binaries and libraries too, and these are unique to your system. I don´t know how achieve this TF2 things to use the common-SO files, and this sounds extremely hard for a Linux newbie ;)

But good luck, of course. If you are interested on Linux, you must know that some year may be necesary to use it at advanced-user-level ;)
