TF2 Black Screen
When I open TF2 I hear the Valve intro and then it crashes while having a black screen the whole time. I know there are many other posts about this but none of those have helped me. I've tried windowed, updating Ubuntu stuff, -novid and many more suggestions I have gotten. Any ideas out there?

what GPU you have?

In order to help you we will need a bit more info like Ubuntu version, graphics card and which drivers you are using.

Can you give the outputs of:
lsb_release -a
and
uname -r
?

I have the same problem:
desktop:~$ lsb_release -a
No LSB modules are available.
Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS
Release: 12.04
Codename: precise
-desktop:~$ uname -r

You could give updating a try:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

or

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I see you're running you system on a VMWare, that's the problem.
Installing the system is best for running 3D games such as TF2, it's pretty easy to shrink your partition and install it. After installed, you can delete the system and contiune with your native one

Aww. all I need to do is get the Tux and I won't be able to get it after midnight tonight and installing everything again would take too long :(

Gee, how far people can go just to get an item? LOL

Installing the system will take as long as running it from a USB stick. I surely wouldn't recommend you doing so, but there's a thread on how to get the Tux without installing Linux.

If your ethic is garbage then you can do it, but I consider it the same as cheating.

My reponse to this kind of thinking was:

I sure hope they do ;)

Specially based on how long people played on Linux to get the Tux

Man, sometimes the fact that I like spending time with my kid means I launch a game to see if it works then maybe don't touch it for a quite a while. That'd be a terrible way to trend what people are doing. Although, if Valve had a "Purity of Intentions" department, this community should be able to fully staff it.

"Johnson! This man got a headshot, but it was luck. The damage from a headshot is meant to reward accuracy and speed."
"Good catch Rogers! Knock him down a peg."

I think it's more about: The linux community is generally willing to help just about anybody, provided they don't shout and act like a spoiled and entitled child when asking for help.

People get ornery when their goodwill is wasted on a TF2 item, and the person asking for help removes Linux and never use it again.
